The story plot is not bad and the telling is not bad. The US president in the story is definitely a parody of G W Bush. Unfortunately, although King-Smith includes few facts, most of them are incorrect, for example, that garden snails (H. aspersa) have two mouths, good hearing, one sex (instead of being hermaphrodites), and an ability to successfully mate with snails of different species or perhaps genera (It is not clear what the 'blonde' snail is.). I feel sorry for the mother who has to correct all of these 'facts'. I think the author could have invested just a bit of energy into research and created a much better book.
