About the Author

Jules Verne was a French writer and pioneer of the science fiction genre through novels like Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, and The Mysterious Island. A visionary, Verne wrote about air, space, and underwater travel long before the ability to travel in these realms was invented, and his works remain amongst the most translated, most continually reprinted, and most widely read books of all time. Jules Verne died in 1905 having paved the way for future science fiction writers and enthusiasts.

This story is written in the format of a journal by a supposed correspondant for a French news magazine. Set in the mid 19th century, it details a journey by train across Europe and through part of Russia to China.

The text is old fashioned and there is a certain amount of racial stereotyping throughout. But in fact the story does give a really good impression of what it might have been like to travel in this way. These days, it is so easy to fly all around the globe, that it is sometime difficult to remember how previous generations reacted to the steam locomotive, and how that allowed a massive growth in national and even international travel.

Although it can get a little tedious at times, I found the descriptions of the landscape very interesting and the story is good at the way it highlights the variations.

It is worth reading, although some other works by Jules Verne are far more readable. When I got it, it was a free ebook - the price may go up

I guess this is one of Jules earlier stories and he hadn't quite established his methods for building up and holding the excitement like some of his more popular stories but nevertheless not a bad read.

If your interpretation of high adventure is walking to the bus stop and pocketing the spare sugar packet at the Costa is high crime, this is the book for you!
Otherwise you will be bitterly disappointed. Even the arc-criminals are quite nice enough to share crumpets and cucumber sandwiches with and the corpses are more dynamic.

So as an adventure it does not work.

It is an lovely diary of a trip that takes so long you have to invent adventure from shadows and Verne has always been good at descriptive prose of what he might see if he ever left Paris. So worth a read to see how to create something from nothing at all
