Product Description

The DVD-Audio of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score for The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) allows the listener to experience this film-music masterpiece in all the giddy glory of Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 surround. Given that this is an all-new version actually recorded in Dolby 5.1, the result is far more natural and less gimmicky than some artificially remixed DVD-A discs.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score for The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) speaks for itself, and if you don't know it by now then it's time you did. This splendid new recording presents--amazingly for the first time--the entire 75 minutes of Korngold's rambunctious, gloriously romantic music, reconstructed by film music historian and composer John Morgan. Add the mini-suite written for the original theatrical trailer and the result is over 80 minutes of the finest film music ever put to a Hollywood picture. That's almost twice as much as the previous benchmark re-recording of this score, from the Utah Symphony Orchestra conducted by Varujan Kojian.

The Moscow Symphony under William Stromberg are by now veterans of Marco Polo's worthy series of film music restorations; but this is their finest hour, as they rise to the tremendous technical challenges of Korngold's action-packed scoring with grace and abundant enthusiasm. There's little evidence here of the rough edges that marred some of their earlier film music performances. An exhaustive and informative booklet completes an absolutely essential package. Clearly, Robin Hood is still an inspiration for both performers and listeners alike. --Mark Walker

.....it loses a star because the recording has been made in 48 MHz surround, not the 96Mhz of which the DVD-A format is capable. This isn't just technical nit-picking, it means that the recording loses a lot of the sparkle and presence which is the hallmark of DVD-A. Having said which, the actual performance is terrific, rollicking fun, meticulously reconstructing the original film score. Definitely worth a listen, definately superior to the CD version, it's just a shame they could have got more out of the format.

HASH(0x9ac170f0) out of 5 stars the one to own- MAGNIFICENT complete 2004 recording of the best film score 30 Sept. 2007
By Mary - Published on Amazon.com
THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD complete film score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra is the most magnificent rendition of this remarkable, hauntingly beautiful music. COMPLETE is the key word here as the Moscow Symphony performance has not edited the score for time considerations. John Morgan of Marco Polo Classic Film Music Series has restored bars of music previously removed in earlier (Utah Symphony) recordings, and returned to the original full orchestration the score deserves. Don't buy any older(tinny)recording when this infinitely better rendition awaits you. It is addictive.

OK it's a DVD Audio. Sounds very nice and I had no problems playing it at all. The complete soundtrack is on the disc (82:43 in length), restored to it's original splendor and well recorded, with some of the missing bits added back which were cut from the film. If you really enjoy the movie and/or soundtrack it would be something to consider checking out. Lots of notes included. I enjoyed it & glad I picked it up.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. The music is great, but THIS one is a DVD, not a CD. It skips, jumps, and quits. I have tried it on three machines and two computers. I'm sending it back...Get the CD, much better......
