For starters it's the most erotic work I have ever read in my life and 50 times more erotic than '50 Shades' that's for sure. So if you liked that book this one is the genuine article and a must for anyone into erotica.
In a way it was like virtual sex because most of the book is told in the first person narrative a bit like old pulp fiction and so you are often inside the main characters head and feeling what he feels and seeing what he sees. The main character is also in a pop group so you get a different insight again into this lifestyle that you don't get with normal characters.
But hold on a minute I haven't even mentioned the main premise of this book that drew me onboard in the first place. It's about a musician in a popular UK indie pop group who lives a secret life outside the UK as a adventurer. He decides to stick a pin in the map and follow it wherever it leads him for one month to have the adventure of a life time and that's exactly what he does. He starts off in Florida in the U.S.A and eventually takes in Cuba and Mexico. So like him you just never know what is going to happen next and that really keeps you on your toes and keeps things fresh and interesting. To add to that there are stories within stories making it a bit like a Russian doll with one featuring a major Hollywood icon.
Although there are a number of dangerous encounters where near death experiences are not far away, the book as I say is very erotic so damsels in distress seem to be this contemporary Dukes stock and trade and he goes from lust to love in equal measure with each female he meets along the way in this intriguing adventure.
Also contemporary is the inclusion of celebrate culture and apart from having an affair with a washed up former pop idol, which I found a very poignant tale he stumbles onto a secret Hollywood A-list sect where sex parties with many original twists take place.
The trip then takes an unexpected turn via Cuba and Mexico that was very exciting and descriptive where you can almost breath the atmosphere, which brings me to the other thing I really liked about this novel. It's not overly flowery and gets to the point fairly quickly while at the same time being very descriptive in a memorable but not long winded way. It also features some brilliant dialogue throughout. One of my favourite bits was spoken by a very interesting rum character, the Rummy.
' Sometimes in life you meet a femme fatale and you can refuse them nothing. They treat you like dirt but even the dirt they dish out has a taste you can't get enough of?'
The final thing I will say about this novel is because the lead character is a songwriter it features some song lyrics and this could have easily fallen down but for the fact that the author is also a songwriter so it brings some authenticity to the proceedings.
It's inevitable that because the author is also in a pop group and a songwriter many will wonder if this is a true story and it does say 'based on a true story' on the back of the book.
All in all this book gets 5 stars and if you only read one book this year make this the one. I'm back off to read it again now as it's also a bit addictive.
A friend recommended it to me saying it was the best book she had read in many years, so it had a lot to live up to.
It was the sheer originality of the story and the great dialogue that really won me over.
I read a lot of good books but can't help feeling that I have come across a similar story before either in another book or on TV and Film but with The Adventures of a Dark Duke it was totally original and I have never read anything like it before. It doesn't have a predictable format either.
The premise of the story is the lead character sticks a pin in a map and follows it to have adventures across Florida. So because he doesn't know what will happen next the same applies to the reader, which is one thing that made this read exciting. It features many interesting characters that the main protagonist meets who themselves have interesting stories so you get stories within stories that take you in yet another direction. It even features one about Greta Garbo that I really loved.
His run in with the Hells Angels was very enlightening and the part of the story set in Cuba was totally captivating. I felt like I was there with the Dark Duke and when the story is told through his character which it often is, it works really well. The book also contains some excellent lyrics that makes the lead character very realistic as he is supposed to be a songwriter and musician. It does contain a lot of erotic bits but that part of it was tastefully and stylishly done.
So, if you are looking for something different and interesting but equally gripping I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for the follow up book now as I'm totally hooked on this character and I was really happy to learn it will be a series of books.
