Review

'a real bible for adventure cyclists' --Cycle, CTC, December 2015/ January 2016

Review for previous edition: 'the definitive guide to how, where, why and what to do on a cycle expedition...' --Adventure Travel Magazine.

About the Author

Harriet and Neil Pike met trekking in Chile in 2002 and together began exploring the world's mountains on foot. A chance Caspian Sea ferry encounter with a cyclist in 2007 led to a switch to cycle touring, and a trip across Europe was followed by a few years in the Andes and Himalaya, during which time they fell in love with riding on traffic-free dirt roads. Neil spends hours poring over maps and scouring satellite images for routes; Harriet is the gear geek and team bike mechanic. They blog at pikesonbikes.com and run the Andes route website andesbybike.com .

brilliant book - so full of detail hints tips and everything you could want to get out there (well except for the bike!)

Quite a bit of changes from the second issue but not a different animal either.

If in doubt - dont be, its well worth the price

A great update to Stephen Lords's cycle touring bible! I have both the first and second editions and I am glad I bought the third. While the first three parts covering equipment and practicalities remain similar to the last edition, they have been updated and added to. The next section of route outlines has been given a new perspective and a refresh with great updates on the areas now open to cyclists and those that have become more difficult for the adventure tourer. There are inspiring new 'Tales from the Saddle' in the final part that make you want to take off tomorrow! With great new photos and a colour introduction, this book is worth buying even if you have read a previous edition. Thank you Stephen, Neil and Harriet!

Brilliant book! Skillfully combines general practical info - from bike, gears, brakes and tyre selection to dealing with dogs - with detailed knowledge and advice about specific destinations across the world. Plus generous chunks of inspiration in the form of entertaining and sometimes breath-gasping travelers' tales. This book will not only help you leap off the sofa and out the door for that next trip but also ensure you make the most of it - and come back in one, grinning piece to plan the next one. Hugely recommended. Thanks Pikes on Bikes!

Amazing book! So much more than I was expecting. The authors had even left a little message in the front cover which made it even more personal. Myself and a close friend are currently planning a world tour across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, India, Nepal, the Far East and eventually Australasia so this book has fast become my bible. It covers everything I could ever hope to ask about travelling through these parts of the world as well as including great advice about gear and living on the road. It is a great compilation of information from many different riders and paints vivid pictures of what is to be expected and taken into account while travelling by bicycle through some of the most beautiful and interesting parts of the world. Thanks very much Neil and Harriet Pike.

If you have any interest in cycle touring, the new incarnation of ACTH is addictive and motivational reading.

As I own an earlier version of the book, I simply intended to read the new and 'updated' bits but I was hooked from the first to the final page. The format remains enjoyable and easy to follow which will also help make it a source of reference when looking for knowledge and guidance going forward and prior to any of my own adventures.

I found the practical information really helpful and I know I will return to the been-there-and-done-it travel honed words of wisdom frequently.

The route outlines, wonderful photographs and the 'tales from the saddle' are inspiring and they certainly gave me the urge to want to jump on the bike and dream about what could, and might, be …

A fantastic book which I recommend highly.

A great revision of the second addition. Lots of new content. This is the comprihensive guide to use if you are thinking of starting touring and also has handy tips and stories making it brilliant to have in your pannier when on tour. This is the only physical book that I think is worth the weight to take on tour.

Probably the best and most comprehensive, informative publication available in the English language for this topic. You can easily plan from local day tours, via week long Continental tours to round the world (RTW) tours. It makes sensible suggestions as to what to do and take and what is not recommended. By itself, it is a very entertaining read even if you don't really fancy a ride around the world. Highest recommendation.
