I consider myself a reasonably advanced Word/Excel user, including extensive use of VBA. However MS Office 2007 is a radically different product 'under the skin', and although it presents superficially as just another version of MS Office, this masks the enhanced capability that has been incorporated following a complete re-write of the code.
Having ploughed through the MS MVP web pages for help on incidental issues, I noticed that Stephanie Krieger (the author of this book) had a particularly enlightening approach for easing readers into XML and other advanced MS Office techniques. She advertised this book on her web pages, and I consequently purchased it. It lives-up in every way to what I was expecting.
However it is NOT a book for MS Office 'beginners'. If you want to delve deeper into the VBA, XML and other advanced capability for any MS Office application (from a user perspective), this is an excellent book and is good value. I thoroughly recommend it.
Unfortunately for me, I found it lacking - too wordy and not enough examples to refer to or verify you are at least going in the right direction.
The typesize is too small which is a little off putting and it tends to skip from one program to another. There are no exercises to confirm understanding and retention of information.
For that reason I had no option but to return the book - as I was left wanting.

Written for experienced Office users, its balanced literary flow makes it a pleasure to read. (Honestly, I've never said anything like that about a software book.) Each topic is logically developed. Examples are succinct and clear without excessive tedious instructions like, select, right click, etc.
I bought this for XML and am happy I did. Besides the text in the book, a CD of resources is included which includes such things as Open Office XML Parts 1 to 5. So, if desired, one can study very deeply from primary sources.
As for the physical binding of the book, I agree with another reviewer that it is poor. This book is simply falling apart despite the care I take. This is something to take in stride because this is one book that really should not be judged by its cover.
In summary: Highly recommended!
I am an IT person who has to work a great deal with large Word docs, a lot of Excel and plenty of Powerpoint presentations, so I am no newbie. But because I copy and paste from other documents, and I have not trained and mastered the detail areas such as Styles, I often have to keep hacking at my documents until they are "close enough".
I looked through a lot of books in Amazon and the Internet to find a good book just for styles and formatting, and I would always find something too simplistic, or a single-step how-to, or a huge doorstop that had the whole world, one click at a time.
This book is different. It starts assuming that I know the basics, which I do, then it gives me a little overarching conceptual story, then goes on to really good nuts and bolts. That it has other topics I care about in Word, and that the book also covers similar topics for Excel and Powerpoint and VBA - icing on the cake.
For now, I am very impressed. I'll try to come back when I have edited a couple of hundred pages in Word and PowerPoint, and when I have wrestled with some new Excel problems. BTW, I bought the Kindle version so I could access this on the road. Not quite as pretty, but it works well.
Very impressive, Ms. Krieger. I look forward to checking out your Office 12, 13, 14, and 15 versions :)
