Review

"...There is no doubt that every chemistry library should have a copy of the comprehensive reference work..." -- Applied Organometallic Chemistry Vol 14 2000

From the Inside Flap

For more than a quarter century, Cotton and Wilkinson′s Advanced Inorganic Chemistry has been the source that students and professional chemists have turned to for the background needed to understand current research literature in inorganic chemistry and aspects of organometallic chemistry. Like its predecessors, this updated Sixth Edition is organized around the periodic table of elements and provides a systematic treatment of the chemistry of all chemical elements and their compounds. It incorporates important recent developments with an emphasis on advances in the interpretation of structure, bonding, and reactivity.

Format: Hardcover
For the 6th edition of Cotton and Wilkinson's classic text, the authors co-opted their ex-PhD students, Murrillo and Bochmann, to assist with the rewriting. Unfortunately their influence appears to have been entirely negative, as the book is appreciably less useful and less readable than earlier editions. One of the strong points of the 5th edition, the extensive chapters at the back of the book surveying selected topics, have been done away with. They have been replaced by a lifeless chapter or two on catalysis, written without any real authority. Rather than buying this book, I strongly suggest tracking down an earlier edition.

I did not study chemistry as an undergraduate, My main role has been teaching A level chemistry for the past 19 years . I purchase chemistry books as reference material and to be honest i would not have purchased this one other than the fact that a used edition was available for around £40. As a non chemistry graduate i should have found this text book inaccessible for the most part, the truth is that it is well written and with the help of youtube for certain content such as geometry it was accessible, easy to read, concise and surprisingly enjoyable. Would highly recommend this book to anyone studying or with an interest in inorganic chemistry.

The title of this book should warn people as to the content.
This is an 'Advanced ' inorganic chemistry book. To me, it is of the most value to final year and post-graduate students and students studying at a lower level should consider purchasing another book.
I found it gave a nice introduction into a vast amount of research which is going on today in the field of inorganic chemistry. It also mixes togeter the areas of coordination, organometallic and materials chemistry as well as what could be called pure inorganic chemistry.
I recommend it to all post graduate chemists who wish to develop a more holistic view of their subject rather than finding themselves confined to their own narrow topic. There are full references provided. Even though it is a huge book, it only gives a relatively small amount of detail, so the references are essential. Also, the majority of references are for quite recent publications. While some people say that this book has been butchered since the last edition, I have to disagree, it's a much more exiting read now.

HASH(0x959772a0) out of 5 stars Disappointing 28 Jan. 2003
By Robert Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
The 5th edition of this book had been compulsory reading during my undergraduate inorganic chemistry courses: it was the inorganic chemistry bible. This edition fails to reach the high standard of its predecessor. In fact, it isn't even a good advanced inorganic chemistry text. Much of the really useful stuff that forms the basis of an understanding of inorganic chemistry has been omitted in favour of niche topics. The book would be better called 'Advances in Inorganic Chemistry' or 'Selected Topics in Inorganic Chemistry'.

HASH(0x959772f4) out of 5 stars Not as good as expected 1 Sept. 2002
By Stefano Libri - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This was one of the best book for inorganic chemistry, but this edition is very different from the previous ones. Many useful chapters have been done away with; they have been replaced with chapters rather poor, especially those about catalysis.
I advise the fifth edition, which is much better, even if it's quite old: the updates of new edition don't offset its flaws.

HASH(0x95c77ee8) out of 5 stars Great book for students and chemists alike 2 Nov. 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This is a classic inorganic chemistry book. Written by at least one giant of inorganic chemistry (G. Wilkinson, Nobel Prize), it is a great reference text for inorganic and organometallic chemistry students, undergraduates and graduate students alike, as well as established chemist professionals.

HASH(0x95b6e60c) out of 5 stars NICE TEXT FOR UNDERGRAD INORGANIC CHEMISTRY 5 Mar. 2003
By reviewer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
With this edition of "Advanced Inorganic Chemistry", Albert Cotton and his co-authors have proved that they kept track of all the recent developments in the field.
This text provides clear and balanced coverage, as it applies to Inorganic Chemistry. Every branch of the course was browsed, and with generous details too. In addition to the general principles and laws, there are updated information on: Atomic Structures of elements, Chemical Bondings and related associations; as well as Chemical Equilibria and Enthalpy.
Together with its insight in Nuclear Chemistry, the details this book provided on inorganic elements and compounds is worthy of praise. It is a fine textbook, which anyone who has the basic knowledge of elementary chemistry should be glad to read.

Great Book - paper back makes it lighter but also a bit less durable! Overall good!
