Can I just alert potential purchasers that Amazon is supplying the US version of this book with American names for note values (whole note, half note etc. instead of the British semibreve, minim etc.)

I use this method with all my pupils and find it works very well indeed. The accompanying CDs are very useful as are the many duets for the teacher to join with the pupil to give a more satisfying musical experience.

I am a piano teacher and I have been using this book for the last few years. In my opinion it is best I've found to date. Virtually all my pupils enjoy it. It caters for different learning styles, and includes ear work and improvisation opportunities, and as far as reading music is concerned, I've seen better results from this book than any other I've used. Not only are student taught to read the notes, but they are also helped to develop directional and spatial awareness when reading music. The pre-reading exercises are very effective in this respect. The pages are clear and uncluttered and the print large. All these things make a difference when teaching beginners. It works well for teenagers, and I've used it successfully with students as young as 10.

If you want to teach yourself how to play the piano or keyboard then this is a good book for you to try. It goes through the basics in a clear way, from what keys are what, how keys, notes, and hands line up together. If you have never read music notation before then there is a clear visual method of learning it.
This brings me on to why it is not good for teachers.
The 'clear visual method' is basically large crotchet shapes, about an inch high, which aren't placed on a stave but dotted around the page in a graphic score pattern; notes at the top of the page represent higher pitch etc. Students are expected to play from this. I find this odd because I think beginners should start on a stave from the outset. And a good teacher will be able to guide their students through this.
Ergo, if you want to teach yourself this book will be really helpful and a good place to start. The teacher will find it more of a hindrance than a useful starting tool.

I find this book a bit solid and academic. Everything you need to progress at a good speed but all a bit daunting. Lightened up and spread into 2 books I think it might be more successful.
