Product Description

From the Back Cover

Adolescence deals with a time of dramatic developmental change, often a time of pronounced inner uncertainty and chaos, which is dominated by the subject's struggle to find an identity of his or her own and by the search for new solutions to old emotional conflicts. Creativity, love and hope vie for ascendancy over hatred, aggression, violence, depression and suicidal despair. Working in the transference, as the editor emphasizes, is vital for the understanding and the undoing of adolescent psychopathology, and tends to provoke especially strong counter-transference feelings in the therapist, calling for sustained supervisory support. The authors of these lectures have gone some considerable distance in providing support in the form of a solid grounding of theory together with their own considerable collective clinical experience. Important perspectives on working with adolescents are explored: the choice of violence, via a violent role-model or ego ideal, as a defence against breaking down; suicidal tendencies, in response to which the therapist's central task is that of waiting and being a container of projected hope; the nature of the patient-analyst relationship, and the importance of including awareness of parental needs for support and treatment where appropriate; ambivalence - self-directed, in particular towards the subject's developing body, and in relation to oedipal objects; and the psychopathology characteristic of the adolescent addict. An overview of the psychoanalytical literature on adolescence is provided by one of the authors, and this is complemented by the editor's own list of selected key source texts.
