I work in tech and I use Mac. I have recently acquired a Sony NEX5NDB Compact System Camera Double Lens Kit (16.1 MP, SEL 1855mm and SEL 16F28mm Lens) which takes both AVCHD video and pictures. I previously had a DSLR + Vid Cam. I'm not a photo-geek, but I like taking nice quality images. And I end up taking quite a lot with 2 young kids. I've got about 25K media assets, a mix of video and pics.

My use case won't be unique. I am time poor. I don't do very much actual editing or processing of photos, except for the one or two really good photos I get a month. I like things to be organized. Most of my video is (to date) unprocessed awaiting the mythical future point in time I will have to process it all. I need to export sets of photos onto the web for family to view.

I have bought and tried (repeatedly!) to get into iMovie and iPhoto. I've also bought and tried Aperture, but found it sluggish on my 8GB MBP (2009). I like the iPhoto interface simplicity but I dislike all of them for a couple of reasons:

1. the lack of clarity of where the files are (eg browsing to a file to attach it can be a nightmare) - due to the use of iPhoto library structure (package?)
2. for iMovie, AVCHD import (.mts) is a nightmare - almost, but not quite impossible - for files that are stored on disk (historic) and not in a card structure. If you do get them in, iMovie insists on conversion to intermediate formats (.mov?) which can take many hours/disk space
3. the need to manage with 2 apps; I really want to see all my media in one place without any fuss and mix and match, so in theory I can make a mixed video with different assets.

Adobe does not try to woo its users. Upgrades re ridiculously priced - so close to the price of a new product that it is often a better bet to go for new. Certainly do not go for each new version as there are only a few new features on each issue, wait until you are several issues behind and then take leap forward - you will save a lot of money and lose very little.

Have used Photoshop 5, 7 then cs2 for a number of years now, but couldn't afford to upgrade to cs6. Always found it better than Sherif. Elements 10 and now 11 do almost the same job but for much less. I know students can get deals on PS cs6 but why not disabled old & retired codgers like me? Hmmm Adobe, think about it please, (or just send me a freebie, I'm not too proud to beg).

As can be seen from the product I purchased I was upgrading from a previous version of the programmes so in many ways I was already sold on the basic product. This upgrade added an essential feature for my use in the organiser section, the ability to locate my photos on a map. I had some problems with the install getting an error about part of the application being used. I needed to get in touch with Adobe support to help me with this but they walked me through the solution online in real time so I would give the support top marks for that.
When it comes to a powerful easy to use photo editor and enhancer, this product has it all and I think it is without equal. The video package is of less interest to me although I do do the occasional short takes for YouTube so I will leave that part of the suite to someone more expert to review. The organiser is not bad but not the best on the market but as a combined organise, photo editor, movie maker product I doubt you will get better.

I needed this to upgrade from my old versions Elements 6 and Premier 4. Seems a good product but I haven't used anything else in anger (to compare it to). I was thinking of buying a full version of Photoshop CS6 - but on checking this has now been replaced by a cloud version with very high monthly rental charges - not for me.
