This is a great module! (in my opinion). FP3 isn't needed for much really so it really is of academic interest only. It contains five virtually independent topics vector geometry(more advanced C4ish stuff), multivariable calculus (basic introduction), differential geometry, groups (slightly more advanced algebra) and markov chains which were thankfully dropped from S4. The only crossover really is chapter 2 where its necessary to know the vector product (covered in chapter 1). I would strongly recommend that FP2 has been covered previously but it is not essential. This module was written primarily to be studied in your own time and so more activities are present in order to get the student to engage more with the material where ordinarily there would be a teacher. It is accessible for a student to study in their own time and perfectly acceptable for teaching in a school.

I've just picked up a copy of this book to see if it's worth our college teaching FP3 in the coming year. Like all the MEI textbooks it is clearly structured, fits directly with the syllabus, and has the useful "grey box" summaries at the end of each chapter.

However, for a book "designed to be accessible to students who have to work on their own" I think it has its pitfalls. Looking at Markov chains for example, it's frustrating there is no clear definition of a reflecting barrier (though it can more or less be deduced from the various examples etc). Also, a lift with states as floors G, 1, 2 3 is used as an example but then a later exercise emphasises that the floors G, 1 ,2 3 shouldn't be used as the states..

I think FP3 is a great module, covering fascinating subjects, but there's unlikely to be an alternative to this book!
