Product Description

Review

"Acupuncture For IVF And Assisted Reproduction is a thorough and extremely well researched contribution to a rapidly expanding field, written by authors with considerable clinical experience. It brings together a wealth of information for the practicing fertility acupuncturist, both from a western medical and an eastern point of view." Reviewed by Martin Dean on behalf of The Acupuncture Fertility Centre, March 2015

"It is an interesting addition to the existing literature on this subject, and will likely appeal more to medical acupuncturists or those with a strong biomedical leaning." Reviewed by Danny Maxwell on behalf of Journal of Chinese Medicine, February 2015.

"Readers of this book will deepen their knowledge of TCM perspectives on reproductive anatomy and physiology, the pathology and aetiology of TCM syndromes presented by subfertile patients and how to diagnose them, and how to adapt acupuncture treatment to ART protocols, all in the wider context of contemporary ART. Practitioners of all levels of experience and TCM students should find it compelling reading and an invaluable companion to their learning." Reviewed by Stephen Clarke on behalf of JATMS, May 2015

About the Author

Irina Szmelskyj is an acupuncturist with more than 10 years' experience specializing in reproductive health care, including the health care needs of patients with infertility issues and the use of acupuncture in the clinical management of patients undergoing assisted reproductive treatments such as IVF. Irina's method of managing subfertile patients is based on a thorough understanding of the value of combining the best of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and conventional medicine. Her approach emphasizes the clinical utility of integrating both classically based traditional acupuncture treatment techniques and concepts with the practical clinical application of contemporary evidence-based advances from the rapidly changing landscape of reproductive medicine research. Irina practises acupuncture at True Health Clinics in Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

Lianne Aquilina is a traditional Chinese medical acupuncturist. In 2005 the Faculty of Health, Life and Social Sciences of the University of Lincoln, awarded her the Dean's prize for Studies in Health. She is an experienced BSc (Hons) acupuncture clinical supervisor. Her role includes teaching third year acupuncture students the application of classical and traditional Chinese medicine principles along with the clinical utility of Chinese acupuncture. She is also a visiting guest lecturer to undergraduate students on the use of Chinese medicine and acupuncture treatment in the management of infertility and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). She completed further training at the Guangdong Province Second Hospital of TCM in China. It was here where she observed an authentic combination of traditional Chinese and medical strategies in treatment and management of disease. Lianne's specializes in providing fertility acupuncture treatment, based on innovative applied classical Chinese philosophy and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concepts of reproductive health and fertility. Lianne practices acupuncture at Aquilia Fertility in Stamford, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom.

This book provides a wealth of information and the specialist knowledge needed for acupuncturists who work with patients seeking acupuncture for natural fertility or ART. There is no stone left unturned – extensive information is provided from both Western and TCM perspectives on every aspect of fertility, from conception and reasons for sub-fertility through to the procedures of ART. In particular it reflects the many years’ of experience the authors have within this field as it also provides information on the more difficult to treat cases, clinical issues during ART, complications, ethical considerations and patient management. Highly recommended.

This book is an essential up to date resource, informative in all aspects of fertility. I keep dipping in and finding interesting and relevant sections that are helpful in many areas of my practice. Surely a must for any TCM acupuncturist wanting to really understand modern ART and how best to apply TCM acupuncture in such cases.

As a qualified acupuncturist in the UK, I found this book extremely informative and well written. It is packed full of up-to-date research in ART techniques which is very useful when talking to both patients and western fertility specialists alike, but also draws from classic chinese medical texts that allows you to put the research into the context of TCM.

The book begins with the foundations of both western and chinese medicine and builds to provide a depth of knowledge and understanding of IVF allowing you to communicate using western terminology which is essential for providing integrated care. There are also plenty of case histories to bring the information to life.

It provides something for both newly qualified and seasoned practitioners and is a staple addition to any acupuncturist's shelf.

As a Traditional Acupuncturist trained by one of the authors' Lianne Aquilina, I was very proud to learn she co- wrote this book on such a popular topic. It has come exactly at the right time as I am getting more and more enquiries for this treatment. I have found that this book covers every aspect from both Western and Chinese Medicine perspective, is thorough and informative. Littered with fantastic diagrams and useful titbits making this a very enjoyable read.
I highly recommend this to any student or practitioner of acupuncture as you will delve into it time and time again.

Acupuncture For IVF And Assisted Reproduction is a thorough and extremely well researched contribution to a rapidly expanding field, written by authors with considerable clinical experience. It brings together a wealth of information for the practicing fertility acupuncturist, both from a western medical and an eastern point of view.

Although a work of this depth will take time to digest, the text is clearly laid out with tables and diagrams, making this one of the more accessible books in the field. As a practitioner I especially appreciated the useful templates and resources contained in the appendices, including a list of common ART medications.

Of value too is the reminder that 'being able to interpret results of subfertility tests and investigations is of vital importance to fertility acupuncturists'. Our ability to make sense of the battery of biomedical test results is one of the challenges to contemporary practice. This book also helps us to speak the same language as our patients, who become totally immersed in assisted reproduction technology.

I especially enjoyed the discussion around Jing-Shen as a mark of the patient's vitality, and in particular the assertion that changes observed during pregnancy may be an accurate predictor of impending pregnancy loss. This is a reminder to all acupuncturists about the value of continued observation of our patients and is something I will more consciously engage with in future. It is also a mark of the humanity that separates us from mere 'technicians'.

The authors also discuss the role of Kidney essence (Jing) as a vital factor underlying sperm, egg and embryo quality, and remind us of its inherited and lifestyle aspects.

This book is a must have for anyone interested in this treatment area whether they are a seasoned practitioner, newly qualified or in the later stages of training. I bought this book soon after it was published and have taken my time reading and digesting the information it contains. Not only is it well researched and referenced it is set out in a way that makes it easy to use both for a quick delve or as a structured learning tool. I found Chapter 4 (Orthodox medical tests and investigations: Optimizing Patient Care) and Chapter 12 (Managing the patient with a complex medical history) particularly useful.

Although the emphasis of the book is aimed towards and comprehensively covers all aspects of Eastern Acupuncture for Western IVF and Assisted Reproduction the information is also relevant to the treatment of individuals who aren’t at the stage of needing Assisted Reproductive Techniques. It is so packed with information that you really have to read it to appreciate the many ways this will assist you in practice and the hard work that has gone into producing this fine book.
