Product Description

From the Back Cover

Cicely Berry, Voice Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, is world-famous for her voice teaching. The Actor and the Text is her classic book, distilled from years of working with actors of the highest calibre.

Building on the specific exercises covered in her first book, Voice and the Actor, Cicely Berry relates the practicality of voice production to the challenges of a different text. And by getting inside the words we use - whether those of Shakespeare or our contemporaries - she shows how to release their energy and excitement for an audience.

Taking part in a recent Cicely Berry workshop here in Australia reminded me how necessary this very simple but extremely vital book is in an actors training. The clarity with which both Berry and Nunn discuss the finer details of the profession clears up any head scratching confusion so many other techniques are often want to offer. This must surely rank amongst the Empty Space's and Impro's of this world where they will be studied in years to come.

This book teaches you to pay attention to every aspect of the text without making it didactic, monotonous and boring. After you read "The Actor and the Text" every text you work on becomes richer, deeper, and actually starts being 100% essential in this very play, on this very stage, this very moment. And anyway – it's a very enjoyable reading.

Useful for any actor. Talks a lot about the language and the sound and vowels when looking at a text. Focuses a lot on Shakespeare, quite lengthy but a good read
