By Og Oggilby TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 16 Dec. 2009
Format: Audio CD
Delbert McClinton has been around seemingly since before the dawn of rock and roll time. The Beatles supported him when he played harmonica for Bruce Channell back in 1962, when Channell was touring with his hit 'Hey Baby'. He apparently showed some harmonica licks to a young John Lennon, which later Lennon used on 'Love Me Do'. Whatever, Delbert's recorded output amounts to a new album every four of five years or so. He's not been the most prolific writer, but what he does write is inevitably very well crafted in a rootsy / old school R&B style, with dashes of country and soul in the mix, too. 'Acquired Taste' is yet another superb addition to Delbert's recorded works, produced by Don Was, and again it scores top marks on so many levels - be it the rolling, regretful Blues of 'Can't Nobody Say I Didn't Try', or the amusing retooling of the nursery rhyme 'Shortnin' Bread' in 'Mama's Little Baby' - take your pick, there is nothing to reject here. It's quality gear, and for an artist pushing seventy pretty hard, shows no signs of creative bankruptcy. If your tastes extend to the likes of Tony Joe White, Bonnie Raitt or even the recent albums by Bob Dylan, you'll find a lot to enjoy here.

I'll be very surprised if Delbert doesn't win another Grammy for this really classy, top quality release. Don Was again twiddles the knobs to great effect and the genre busting, mixing & crossing of musical styles merely reaffirms Mr McClintons place at the top of the tree, where it has been for the past 20 years of truly consistent Texas Roadhouse music. Of course Delbert's place in musical history goes back to the early 60's and his well charted success with Bruce Channel (including touring with the Fab Four) plus his songwriting has appealed and hit the spot for so may others for over half a century now. However, using his very tight, current Road Band (now called Dick50) for this session, not just for their playing, but Kevin McKendree and Rob McNelley contribute to much of the writing, along with regular, long time, cohort Gary Nicholson plus the recent rockier addition of Tom Hambridge, ensures a wide spectrum of sub-genres. There's not a bad track on the album and if you've never had a Delbert CD in your collection, then be careful with this one, cos you'll find it ever so difficult not to track back and purchase as many of the previous ones as possible. It's not blues, it's not country, it's not soul, it's not jazz, it's not rock, as I say, it's genre busting and superb.

It's not country, it's not pop, and it's certainly not rock. Deldert McClinton's work over the decades has been hard to catagorize because you simply don't know what's coming up next. This latest CD from Mr McClinton showcases a jazzier side to his vocal style with a bit of blues thrown in for good measure and without a doubt his voice does justice to the genre. My main critisism of this CD is that after the first track, an updated version of "Shortin bread" which is rather catchy, the rest of the CD seems to be less up beat and after the first few tracks you start wanting the next to be a different tempo. This I feel let's the CD down because while it's a good background CD to play at dinner parties, it will struggle to get your toes tapping. Die hard McClinton fans will love it. But for people who buy on a whim it may take longer to accquire the taste. it's OK but nothing great.

Del up to his usual standard and great sound but I wish he make a straight ahead Rock' or Blues album.
