Key to the ecstatic reviews of the Q Acoustics Concept 20 speakers is the cabinet design. Unlike any other design, anywhere near this price point, the Concept 20 speakers uses a unique cabinet isolation design. Effectively, the Concept 20 speaker offers a cabinet within a cabinet, separated by a special resonance cancelling compound called Gelcore. This construction style of cabinet massively reduces the resonance or 'voice' of the cabinet, meaning you get far less distortion. Proved to work by laser measurement, the Concept 20 simply sounds clearer, more natural and a whole lot more expensive than its price tag would suggest. Matching up to such an impressive cabinet is no easy feat, but the driver units don't let the side down. The soft dome tweeter has a smooth and refined sound that, although detailed, never becomes harsh. The tweeter unit is also decoupled from the rest of the cabinet, meaning that it isn't affected by vibration from the bass woofer unit - yet another impressive touch at this price. The bass unit may be small, but its long-throw design also offers up a surprising amount of power for its size. What's more, it's the quality of the bass content that's hard to fault. Precisely timed, textured and consistent, the bass and mid-range response are truthful to the sound at all times. Big enough to fill a room with sound but small enough not to overwhelm it, the Concept 20s are ideally judged speakers. With their rounded corners they further soften their visual impact in your home. Choose between gloss white or gloss black for the perfect match.

As it was just too difficult to audition live I decided to read up and buy blind with the intention of selling on Ebay if I made the wrong choice.
I did consider floor standers but as I am a detail and soundstage freak I decided to look at stand mounted. The Q Acoustics concept 20 stood out as all the reviews commented on their clarity and detail as well as good bass and fantastic treble. The only negative was they all also said that you would only get the best from these speakers if you placed them on the bespoke stand that is manufactured for them but which retails at around £200 ! As I already owned a superb set of Atacama stands that was nearly a deal breaker but I decided to go for the combo as the Atacamas are a little shorter than the Concept 20 stands and may not have been ideal for what is a small box.
When I got everything set up and playing my concerns about the cost evaporated. I am not going to say that they blow the Avants, sat on the Atacamas, out of the water because that would not be strictly true. In fact the Avants are , in many areas, not that far behind the Qs but the Qs are a bit of a step up.
When listening at low volume level there is little to separate them but where the Avants can lose a little cohesiveness at higher volume the Qs retain all their composure. You are rewarded with brilliant and transparent highs and plenty of clean but forceful bass. These speakers never sound stressed - they are always up to the job and deliver well ordered and precise music that is always a joy to listen to whereas the Avants can start to sound slightly ragged when pushed hard.
A great feature is that they sound right with all genres of music whether it be light acoustic to head banging rock and they never seem out of step with what they are being fed. I am not an audiophile but I am a music lover and I want that music to sound as good as it can, given reasonable financial constraints. For me the Q Acoustic's Concept 20 fulfils that criteria, even given the added expense of the bespoke stand. They are a truly enjoyable speaker and worth the outlay.
For me their clarity and precision is their most impressive feature but also their relatively small size conceals hidden depths of sound that you feel must be coming from a larger enclosure. I know it has been said a thousand times before but it really is difficult to grasp that so much sound is coming from such a small source. By sound I mean deep satisfying bass and sublime highs and all under such tight control.
If you are wondering what they sound like on the Atacama stands I am afraid that I don't know. They went on their own stands, which put them at the correct height, they sounded just great and there they remained. Call me a coward if you want !
I would recommend placing the speakers on stands because the speaker's position in the room, relative to your seating position, makes a tremendous difference to the sound quality that you will enjoy and so it is worth the extra investment in some stands to help you to achieve the best results.
For anyone who is undecided I would say take the plunge and at least you get to audition them properly and with your equipment. They will always sell if you did decide they were not for you but I would hazard a guess that most people will love them.
