The ever prolific Joe Bonamassa has, again, taken his material to another level.
Certainly he's been involved in one or two questionable ventures of late (Black Country Communion and Rock Candy Funk Party - showing that while he is not a one dimensional player, he's not a shredder or a jazz fusion guitarist either!) but that when it comes to his own material, there are few to rival him on either electric or acoustic guitar - and while he's not on the same level as say a Steve Hackett or Gordon Giltrap, what he does, he does very, very well indeed - and as if to prove a point, amplifies that by releasing the results recorded at the Vienna Opera House as a live double album.
I know that many will criticise the fact that this is a live album and that he's produced several live double albums in what is a relatively short period of time and that therefore has produced several songs several times over. That said, this is an altogether different kettle of fish as everything here is played acoustically meaning that the man has to work that much harder to put the music itself across- a fact he acknowledges himself within the sleeve notes where he says that when you remove the big Gibson sound, the long solos and the lengthy sustain getting the songs over to the audience is much more difficult. Difficult it may be but this here double CD of 21 songs is highly entertaining and along with Arlan Shierbaum, Lenny Castro, Gerry O'Connor and Mats Wester puts together a range of songs that certainly cover the spectrum that represents the best of the music of Joe Bonamassa or his interpretations of songs by Charley Patton, Tom Waits et al.

I have to say I was stunned to read an earlier review which was critical of the sound quality on this album. My copy is beautifully clear and pin sharp!

This album is a reworking of Joe's material and it is sooooo good! Different but brilliant and worth every penny. It is interesting that the different acoustic reworking means that songs that would not necessarily be amongst my first picks from Joe's electronic catalogue have suddenly been transformed and now rate amongst my favourites. Joe's playing is (as always) amazing and this band are superb. I just hope he brings an acoustic tour to the full range of British venues.

Just as he announces he is stepping down from the role of guitarist in Black Country Communion, the ever-restless Joe Bonamassa unleashes a curt reminder of his phenomenal skill not just as a guitarist, but as a vocalist. A very special album indeed, `An acoustic evening at the Vienna opera house' captures Joe in the midst of a two week acoustic tour alongside special guests Gerry O Connor (fiddle), Mats Wester (nyckelharpa), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboards) and Lenny Castro (percussion), four multi-instrumentalists who play a curious assortment of exotic instruments that provide a depth and entirely different sonic slant to such Bonamassa stalwarts as `Dust bowl', `slow train' and `the ballad of John Henry'. Available as either a double CD, DVD or standalone Blu-ray, this remarkable set is best appreciated on one of the two visual formats as they offer enhanced sound (both DVD and Blu-ray offer DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 as standard, alongside a PCM track) and a better idea of the venue's glorious surroundings.

Possibly aware of the wealth of live albums and DVDs already attached to his name, Joe Bonamassa clearly had it in mind that any new endeavour would have to be special indeed and, in that respect, he has succeeded admirably. There is a sense of occasion connected with this DVD that comes not only from the stunning and often very different arrangements developed for this set, but also from the stunning surroundings which are magically rendered intimate (despite their size) by some truly excellent filming and editing. Just recently there seems to have been a trend away from the ghastly, MTV-inspired technique of rapid jump cuts and odd visual effects that became so common in live filming, and an elegant show such as this benefits from the slow, subtle work that has been gifted to it.

I bought this album after watching this concert on Sky Arts. I was taken by the acoustic sounds of Joe's guitar and wanted the CD to listen to it on long car journeys. Quality is not bad although i would have loved a bit more studio enhancement on the purity of the sound - but still, good album.

Very good indeed.

Some have niggled about the sound quality but it is what you would expect from a live concert, so has a honest feel to it.

Judge for yourselves

If you like Joe Bonamassa you will love this. A cross section of his back catalogue given a new slant. The vocals and guitar playing as subtle and sublime as we have come to expect from a great performer. A perfect alternative to his Beacon Theatre or Royal Albert Hall sets, (both 5* albums), if you want to chill out to some quality blues.
