How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

4.0 out of 5 starsVertical lines and flickering
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 November 2019
2020 Update: In January Acer released firmware to address flickering and vertical lines. It did get rid of flickering and it mostly got rid of vertical lines, but not entirely. They still briefly show up in some scenes, especially when there's movement, like strafing in games.

It's a shame it's not perfect, but honestly, this is the only G-Sync ultimate 1440p ultrawide monitor with Full Area Local Dimming on the market (Asus is using the same panel and suffers from the same issues).

I've changed my rating to 4 stars. I think it's worth buying now, but it's not clear cut, considering the high price and remaining flaws.
---
Would be a great monitor, good colours, brightness and refresh rate. Viewing angles are a bit weak compared to IPS, so not ideal for desktop use, games looks great. Would give it 5 stars, but...

The monitor suffers from vertical lines/flickering issues, and judging from forums, reddit etc. it's a widespread issue, that hasn't been fixed. I haven't found a single person who complained about the issue and reported to receive a replacement without this fault.

There are also reports of issues with the fan, but the unit I bought was quiet, no problems with the fan at all.

A little bit of criticism on Amazon UK, the seller.
My monitor arrived today.
The driver rang the main entrance doorbell and waited.
They did not bring the monitor to my door (1st floor).
They were rude, grumpy, with a judgemental/entitled look, as if they wanted to say "you didn't seriously expect me to bring this huge box to your doorstep.
The driver placed the box on the pavement on pooling water (yes it rained today) without even considering that this is a £2.000 product they're delivering.
I carried my monitor to the first floor and unpacked.
And the horror begins.
A clunking and rattling sound from the rear of the monitor when swivel it right and left.
You can imagine my worry.
I immediately contact Amazon UK help.
A nice fellow tends to me asking for details.
I shoot a video and I email to them.
The nice fellow then proceeds to escalate this, informing me that only the management team can handle the replacement as this is a high value item within two business days.
Fair enough.
In the next 5 minutes I receive an email with a return for refund label.
I get on the phone this time and I speak to a nice lady this time.
I explain the situation and she repeats that the management team etc etc.
And within 5 minutes (you guessed right) another email with a label and I can now see on my account that there is an open return for refund case for my monitor.
I would like to stress, I did NOT ask for a refund, but a replacement.
Twice.
Never mind.
I did a little bit of searching online for similar cases.
And there is a dude on you tube with a monitor displaying EXACTLY the same issue (Acer X35 Monitor - something knocking around inside if you care to look).

Now for the best part.
I am an impatient fellow.
I cannot wait for Amazon UK to get themselves together and finally make up their mind about it.
I cannot wait for someone to decide whether or not they will replace the monitor for me (or worse, refund me against my wishes).
So I open the monitor.
Yes.
I removed the rear plastic cover.
Used a credit card and with bit of force it started coming off.
I didn't even injure the plastic edges of the backplate.
And (as I kind of suspected) the speaker on the left side of the monitor (left as you are looking it from behind, where the button panel is placed) is loose.
It is a rectangular speaker, perhaps 0.5x3 inches, held in place by two plastic spikes (one on each end) with a soft plastic ring to prevent vibrations I presume.
Well, one of the rings on the top end was missing, the speaker was only held in place by the bottom ring, and with even minute motion it would hit the backplate of the monitor producing the clunking sound.
Yes, problem solved.

However my experience highlights a few discrepancies with Amazon UK customer services and most importantly with Acer production line.

You can ask "what did you expect on a Saturday morning".
And I can answer that when it comes to a £2.000 monitor, I expect Amazon UK to go to extreme lengths to ensure my satisfaction and offer me the kind of customer service they profess to be capable of.

Their driver, well, obviously does NOT enjoy his job and has zero customer service skills.
The helpers I spoke to, well, they were willing to help and sympathetic.
But my problem was not solved and I had to take the risk opening my monitor (did I void my warrantee? who knows, who cares) because Amazon UK did not seem willing to replace a (what seemed to be faulty £2.000 monitor).
Did I have to go through this today??
Well, I'll leave that to you.
Happy end?
Questionable.

As per the monitor's performance, will update my review once I've spent some time with it.
I hope this answers the question of what is the clunking noise (if you experienced it).

I am very critical about both Amazon UK and ACER, but I sincerely hope you can see why.
Buy at your own risk and be warned, the monitor is NOT eligible for a return and refund under normal circumstances.

1 star is too generous given my dreadful experience today.

Edit, Tuesday 26 January 2021.

Superb image quality, slight light bleeding in the dark (when black background is used) which does not bother me otherwise, impeccable response times in gaming with zero ghosting and DREAMY HDR as expected.

I have not encountered any flickering, any horizontal or vertical lines or any kind of artefacts at any given time when switching the monitor on or off or during use.

I did update the monitor's firmware as per ACER's recommendations for Predator X35 monitors with serial numbers where the 11th-13th characters are <950. But I did not have any issues to begin with anyway. So this is entirely optional as per ACER.

The ONLY reason I would not recommend this monitor is its poor sound quality. For £2,000 this monitor should be singing like Aretha Franklin herself. But instead, the sound is very poor, cannot possibly describe how poor it sounds. My PREDATOR Z35 sounds unimaginably better in contrast. You will certainly need an external sound source for gaming and/or entertainment.

Would I buy again?
Yes but only because I cannot wait any longer to replace my Z35.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does it all!

I was looking for a future-proof monitor that I could use for photo editing, high refresh rate 4k gaming, and HDR media playback, with a side order of working from home. This monitor ticked all the boxes.

For photo editing, colour accuracy is excellent and the IPS panel is beautiful. It gives me 99.8% sRGB and 98.9% Adobe RGB gamut coverage (161.4% and 111.2% volume coverage), with a Delta E of 0.16. This is up there with more expensive professional displays.

For a PC monitor, I really can't fault the HDR experience. It comfortably hits 1000nits and the local dimming function works well and produces a very contrasty image with realistic colours. It actually compares very well to my Samsung QLED TV.

There is a bit of a trade off in games. If you want to keep 10 bit or HDR colour, you're limited to a refresh rate of 98Hz. If you want to hit 120Hz, you need to drop down to 8 bit colour (which rules out HDR), and you'll need to switch to YCBCR 4:2:2 mode to hit 144Hz (which isn't worth the image quality hit). Provided you can live with "only" 98Hz at 4K, images look stunning and gameplay above 60Hz really has to be seen to be believed. The monitor has full gsync support, so your experience stays smooth when your frame rate inevitably drops. Surprisingly, even my Nintendo Switch looks good on this screen, largely due to the high pixel density.

For working from home, the monitor has tilt, height and swivel adjustment, so it's easy to find a good working position. You will need to run it at 150% scaling to keep fonts readable, but it still gives more than enough screen space to have two documents on screen at the same time.

The only real weakness are design limitations. There is a fan, which is relatively inaudible during use, but carries on running at full speed for about 15 mins after you turn the monitor off (you get used to it, but it can be irritating in a bedroom). The biggest drawback is connectors - there's a plethora of USB ports (which you really don't need), but only one displayport 1.4 port and one HDMI 2.0(b?) port. The HDMI port supports VRR, but is limited to a maximum of 60Hz. If you're connecting multiple devices to your monitor, you'll have to invest in an HDMI switch (mine is unbranded, but supports 3 ports with full HDMI 2.0b and HDCP 2.2).

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic HDR, but with caveats
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2021

Firstly just wanna address what the guy below said about delivery. Mine was delivered to the front door but also the driver did look at me as if he wanted to kill me. The box is ridiculously huge and that's why. Amazon should be using a 2 man delivery service for this item like you get at other retailers.

The HDR on the monitor is great. Of course though, it doesn't reach OLED levels in terms of accuracy (I have a LG C9), but its as good as your gonna get until LG release OLED monitors or smaller OLED TV's that are better to use as monitors. 1000nits is gloriously bright.

There are downsides though, but on balance I've accepted them. I've come from IPS to this monitor which is VA. You will notice black smearing im afraid if you do this even with overdrive on. Commenters below who say no ghosting are likely coming from other VA panels and so don't notice this. I can attest how much that affects your perception as now after owning this for some months, its as if my mind has deleted the black smearing. I dont see it anymore. But when I first got it it was annoying to the point of wondering if I've made a huge mistake. On games like FIFA is it is most evident (black lines in player marker across green background). However, I can say I just dont notice this anymore. So I'm glad I stuck it out, but you need to expect this.

Another thing work mentioning is this a 512 zone FALD monitor so you are going to see halo's in menus and mouse pointers since 512 zones (whilst best on offer thats not an OLED where every pixel is a zone) is several orders of magnitude smaller than the number of pixels. This doesnt really manifest in game apart from:

* HUD elements, which I tend to turn off as much as possible.
* Things like subtitles

Another negative affect is that in very dark scenes (like corridors in the game "medium"), you can notice a sort of "shimmer" as the 512 zones all adjust between 0% and just above 5%. This can be annoying but only in limited scenes.

No fan noise issue here. That was resolved in a firmware update. Mine arrived already updated.

Should you buy this? Well, it is overpriced. But its also the best HDR monitor available unless you want to consider the 48" LG TV. Its a luxury item that packs a lot of technology but is still a bit flawed next to OLED. I suspect Mini LED will also supersede this eventually with more zones.

In the end, I'm still glad I have it. I can look past its flaws to enjoy the HDR and ultrawide ratio. When I turn HDR off, I could simply never go back. This means I have ruled out monitors like the G9 which has a pathetic number of zones. But please be aware that even at this price, you are not getting perfection. I already own an LG OLED, but if I didn't, I'd get that first.

For picture quality it is outstanding. I had a Predator LCD previously which is an excellent screen, but this IPS unit is a noticeable step up.
On the down side, the speakers are very poor and so separate attachments to your PC is recommended.
It also generates a surprising amount of heat out the front & back.

I honestly don’t know why this monitor has negative reviews I have had zero issues with it, I have a later model that was manufactured in April 2020 so I assume acer have addressed all the known issues because I have had no screen flickering or a loud fan ramping up and down as people have said So hats off to Acer. HDR on this monitor is frighting it is so good it literally feels like it’s shining right through you it’s so bright. If you have the money you won’t be disappointed. It’s truly astonishing.

What a massive let down this monitor was. Worked for a little while and now the fan wants to go 100% all of the time. Its so loud too. I cant work or have conversations with people in the room or on teams calls. Acer want me to send it in which could take weeks to get it back which I can not do. Will be chasing a refund on this. Latest Firmware too.

I'm not sure what other people are expecting. This is a quality monitor, very smart looking. Its heavy however, you shouldn't need to move this around. I would suggest anyone that has the money, do it.
