My basic needs were to have something light & user-friendly when travelling for emails, internet browsing & transfer of photos. After reviewing everything I could find on the subject of netbooks it became clear that some products lost stars for things that did not interest me - such as playing on-line games, watching videos on long-haul flights & using as a full-on computer when working abroad.
ACER came out consistently as a trusted brand and this new, "new generation" netbook ticked all of my boxes as well as having the welcome addition of an HDMI input, whilst still retailing at a competitive price.
Being only moderately computer-able I needed a friend to help me set up the Wi-Fi component but Windows 7 is intuitive and responsive so no problems there, although I am used to XP.
Screen resolution with HD is amazingly clear and sharp and it is simple to plug into TV for viewing my pictures & videos.
Battery life is approx. 6 hours and it comes with a light, slim charger supplied with a clip-in UK plug.

Overall a top purchase:- good price, good looks, great function.

I do however have a few minor gripes for all netbooks, not just this little Acer gem:-
1.When everyone says that increasing the memory drive to 2GB will increase response why do all these netbooks- not just Acer- supply us with 1GB? This can be upgraded but will need to be done by someone familiar with such tinkerings.
2.My SLR camera and ipod speakers both came supplied with a European, as well as UK, clip-on adapter for the charger. As this netbook is designed to used on the go surely a bit of extra plastic at the point of sale would have been a plus ?
3. Comes with Windows 7 starter, but for anything more than basic use you need to purchase an upgrade to Windows 7 home premium- Amazon sell this but it's not cheap.

The Acer Aspire One 522 looks great. It is sleek, light-weight, well designed and the green colour looks rather jaunty. The problem comes, however, when you switch it on and try to use it. The applications kept crashing and not responding. Opening and closing windows took an eternity. Just basic browsing and emailing was obviously too much to ask.

I am not techy enough to know what the problem is (maybe processing, memory, operating system...), but I am not going to waste more time and money trying to upgrade it.

After three excruciating days, I quietly put it back in its tastefully designed box. I will give it to a friend of a friend and hope she has more patience than I do.

I should give a quick update on this. I decided to follow all the great advice given by other reviewers. I deleted all the garbageware (Norton, McAfee, Bling, EBay, Skype, Games)

I tuned for performance: start/Control Panel/System and Security/system/advanced system settings/advanced/settings/adjust for best performance

I uploaded Google Chrome, AVG, KLite Codec pack.

At this point things were already looking a lot better, but I then upgraded to 2GB RAM (bit of a pain, but do-able)

Now the performance is pretty good and plugged into my monitor, I am really pleased with it.

Conclusion: If you enjoy tinkering around with computers and don't mind spending a couple of days setting it up, this machine is a great performer at a budget price. However, if you want something that works well right out of the box, this is not a good option.

For all those stupid reviewers who always end up by saying "It won't play games or edit video", this netbook won't either, but people don't buy netbooks for that.

This Acer 522 has one of the latest AMD cpu's c-50 with integrated graphics chip. Its only a 1ghz processor but it is dual core and has an inbuilt Radeon HD6250 graphics chip. What this means in simple terms is it will play 720p HD video, Has a HDMI output port and has a standard screen resolution of 1280X720 (usually only found on 11.6 - 15.6 displays).

This is what sets this netbook out from the competition. The screen is excellent, being clear and crisp and even better with higher resolution.

It comes loaded with windows 7 starter. Many people say an upgrade is a must, but I find windows starter fine. Really, unless you you cant live without changing your desktop wallpaper or windows media centre, starter is fine.

The keyboard is as good as any with near full size keys and a light touch.

Track pad is large with a nice matt feel and large single button.

It set up with no hassle at all and picked up my wifi instantly.

Now the problem! Its a universal problem with netbooks that I think is partly due to microsoft requiring that windows starter only ships with 1Gb ram installed.

1GB of ram is simply not enough. The Graphics cpu takes 256mb so you only have a usable 744mb. The first thing you have to do is upgrade the ram to 2GB, then everything runs much smoother.

The upgrade requires the keyboard be removed but don't be put off by this, its only 5 clips. There are some excellent video's on youtube showing how its done, but it really is a must. If the unit shipped with 2GB of ram it would get 5 stars.

If you want a fast 10" netbook with a great screen and better resolution than most netbooks, a HDMI port and video play, at a good price, you could do alot worse than this!
