The other odd thing is that while my old i7 computer and got slower and slower as it has gone out of date this machine has stayed exactly the same.
The battery is less efficient but
The machine Turns on instantly just like it always did
Everything works, I don't know how they do it but it just works.
Google docs and Mail are as reliable as ever.
They keys have lasted well.
I did stand on the screen once but I managed to fit a new one with little hassle.
It was not expensive either, I got the entry level model.
This machine is still used every single day but me and my wife. It has been round the world with me. It has helped me out when I got trapped in Europe and has seen a load of action.
If it broke now I would not mind but I'm not getting another until it does and it feels as solid as it always did.
Get a newer version. These are great.
It boots when you open the lid, about as fast as my 2014 MacBook Pro resumes from sleep sometimes - really impressive.
The build quality feels a bit plasticy which is to be expected at this price point, but actually I was very impressed by how slim it is. It looks really good!
The screen's nice and bright but also has great low brightness settings which is great for evenings. Sure the viewing angles suck but you generally use a laptop looking directly at it so it's not a problem.
I've had plenty of tabs open on Chrome and not noticed any performance issues, I've streamed HD YouTube videos and they're fine, battery life is pretty sensational - for light daily use I'd probably charge it a couple of times a week tops.
I've not tried many apps yet - I don't need it to do much more than what I'm doing now, but I have no doubt it'll perform fine; I've been pleasantly surprised by the speed.
Oh and it's silent when the fan's not running, but it tends not to kick in with general browsing (not to an audible level anyway).
I chose this one based on some brief research I did on the CPU; this is an older CPU than the other models - it's both more powerful and more power hungry but I prioritised that over battery life, especially given the already-long battery life of these things. And the ability of all recent processors to be pretty good under light loads, like casual web browsing.
Needless to repeat what everyone says about these - can it replace your Windows laptop? Depends what you do. If you use Gmail for email, Drive for your office software, and stream videos/music online... It works really nicely, and you can't beat a sub-£200 laptop really.
I really wanted the Toshiba Chromebook 2 which I've read somewhere has a backlit keyboard, but it was a lot more expensive, so this is my trial Chromebook until I can justify a higher spec model with the same 'cut-down' operating system!
I find touchscreens very helpful on a laptop having got used to their benefits on a lenovo yoga - and the key bits of selecting and swiping are all supported here.
Chrome OS feels as though it is still in a state of transition between being exclusively a browser-based system to one that is increasingly making use of apps that run in their own resizeable windows. It is possible to get by on the browser options alone, but the apps that are now appearing feel like a more flexible way to go. So - a work in progress but one that is already hugely powerful. This light and slick little machine is now my preferred device.
It updates automatically, without configuration on his or my part.
With chrome remote desktop via hangouts, I can take remote control of his machine to help him when required.
He has no need for firewall or anti virus software to slow the computer down.
The screen is more than adequate, bright and large enough for everyday requirements.
The long battery life means it can be used around the house without having to sit at a desk.
Everything runs in a browser tab without hidden sub-menus, whether it be word processing, email, or browsing.
It boots up fast, and loads pages quickly.
Having tried windows 7 and Ubuntu, Chrome OS is his favourite option, because most of his online requirements are via the browser anyway. Installed ghostery and adblock plus extensions so there are even fewer potential issues.
Compatible Eprinters can be purchased relatively inexpensively, so that the whole package costs less than £250.
My father feels confident that he is relatively secure from virus and malware problems, thus making his browsing experience more comfortable. I spend less time providing tech support.
