Low cost, low power, low noise, high usability

I, like most people I imagine, got this to use as a HTPC, permanently connected to a TV via HDMI. Its dual-core D525 processor and 2GB of DDR3 RAM are more than enough for HTPC purposes, helping it to transcend the "nettop" tag. It can do pretty much anything a fully-fledged desktop can do, running browsing, email, office, music and video apps simultaneously with ease. Applications are slower to start up than with a traditional PC, but for some reason it's not as irritating as it would be in a desktop situation. It can cope with HD video up to 1080p okay so long as you're using its NVIDIA Ion2 for graphics rather than the D525's built-in video capabilities.

There's a decent selection of ports: 6 USB ports (2 are located on the top rather than the front usually listed in specs), multi-card reader, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet and optical audio. The last of these is located on the front of the unit along with the headphone and mic ports, not the best placement aesthetically for a permanent audio connection to a home cinema system. The eSata interface from the old R3600 version has disappeared, but I never used eSata anyway so I don't miss it.

The unit is very quiet. You only ever hear a fan during boot-up. It does emit a low frequency hum that undulates in a regular pattern, but I expect most people wouldn't even notice it. (UPDATE: it turns out that the low frequency hum was being produced by the portable hard drive I'd attached to the R3700, meaning the computer itself is incredibly quiet.)

One let-down is the keyboard/mouse included with the unit. The version I purchased came with a (Logitech-manufactured) wired keyboard and wired mouse; I believe the Windows version comes with their wireless counterparts, but even these aren't ideal for a HTPC setup. What you really need is a keyboard with a built-in touchpad or trackball (I ended up with the Logitech diNovoEdge Keyboard).

On an OS- rather than product-related note, the version I bought ran Linux Linpus (making it even cheaper), which I then replaced with Ubuntu. If you're planning on doing this, you're in for a world of hurt: no audio through HDMI, hanging on shutdown, no wireless "n", etc. All these things can be resolved by carrying out searches online, but you should probably only attempt it if you're familiar with Linux systems, or if you're prepared to face a very precipitous learning curve.

The perfect HTPC would probably be the Apple Mac Mini, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB, 320 GB, GeForce 320M, SD but, for around a third of the price, I'm more than happy with the R3700.

I am very happy with the service. I just like to mention that the version installed of linux is a very old one and that an upgrade is absolutely needed before being able to use the computer.

Perfect Partner for XBMC

I purchased this as the basis for a HTPC. I previously ran an Xtreamer but having seen XBMC on an AppleTV decided to give XBMC a go. I used the Revo as the hardware platform coupled with OpenElec as the OS. OpenElec is a seriously pared down Linux with only the components needed to run XBMC. Downside of this approach is that the machine is a dedicated media centre but the upside is that it runs like a dream. Cold boot time (from power on rather than standby) into XBMC is 10-15 seconds. I have not run this as a general purpose nettop but as the basis for a media center it works perfectly.
