Why can’t I have the best of both worlds? A highly entertaining unpredictable novel that explores philosophical issues and provokes some deep thought. I stumbled across Accumulation and found exactly what I was looking for.
Accumulation follows the journey of Cam as he wrestles with the phenomenon of strange tattoos continuously materializing all over his body. On the surface, this sounds like it could be just another supernatural mystery to add to the ever-growing list, fortunately it isn’t. The book doesn’t just focus on solving the mystery at the heart of the story (which may or may not be supernatural), but on the impact it has on Cam’s life. Like it or not, our identity is largely based on our physical appearance and when Cam’s appearance is permanently vandalized, so is his identity. This then leads us down the road to questioning what is it that defines us? Luckily Accumulation doesn’t take itself too seriously, so the road we take to find that answer is never boring. There’s plenty of dark humor and satire along the way.
Unexpected twists and turns, quirky, yet relatable characters and of course, great writing kept me engaged throughout. I’m a big fan of Chuck Palahniuk’s early work and I think Accumulation can easily be compared to that work. Entertaining literature not confined or defined by genre.
The only downside of Accumulation is that it was over before I knew it. I hope Buan Boonaca’s next novel comes out soon, because now I need something new to read.
