Young Drucilla Winterbourne receives a disturbing letter from her best friend Celeste, urging her to visit her at the house of her new and mysterious husband in Cornwall. Drucilla departs immediately for Cornwall, accompanied by her elderly aunt Bridget and her cats, only to discover that she got there too late and her friend is dead. However, as she is not convinced that Celeste's tragic fall from the roof was an accident, she begins to investigate determined to bring her friend's killer to justice.

It is remarkable that although this is a short novella of only 17,000 words, it is not rushed at all and it maintains all aspects of a great mystery story. The plot is gripping, with imaginative twists, bloodcurdling moments and suspense throughout. The characters are fascinating and well developed, and the descriptions of the haunting castle in Victorian Cornwall are amazing.

This historical mystery novella is wonderful and I highly recommend it.

There are so many mistakes in this story l can't name them all. Right from the start when the location was described as being off the coast of Cornwall, which would be an island, to the description of the house I knew the author wasn't British. Has she ever even visited Cornwall? Not to mention the identity of the murderer was quite obvious. I could go on but I wouldn't want to spoil it for other readers.

This short novelette is an interesting read but it doesn't take long to know the writer isn't English. There are a couple of wording mistakes only an American could make along with one use of modern, American terminology. Having said that I quite enjoyed it... Right up until the main character made a great leap in deduction without actually knowing the truth. From then on it was a tad unbelievable. This could have done with being a novel so that more info could be put in. And one beta read by a brit.

I normally avoid short stories but gave this a go and enjoyed.Like another reviewer it has all the elements of a full novel. Would like a longer story however would certainly recommend this give it a go.

This was poorly written and badly edited. Drucilla became Pricilla for a while, titles are in a dreadful muddle. It is what would have been known as a 'penny dreadful'

Disappointed in this book. Didn't engage my interest and not enough descriptive writing so didn't feel I would want to read any more of her books.

Nice and easy short read for a gloomy autumn afternoon. A welcome female heroine and a comfortable read which captures the social restrictions of the time.
