It's a man meets girl, falls in love and, after a few misunderstandings, they'll get over it and settle down for ever and a day, sort of book.i thought. But there was much more to it than that, it had depths that none of us would find ourselves ready to cope with, not even in the most stable of relationships.
Greg, our hero is a writer. All readers enjoy books about writers, so that makes us feel comfortable, especially when, in my case, I also write. So that is a good reason for starting the book in the first place. Rachel is the girl, designing the art work relating to book production, amongst other things. All is hunky dory, except there are a couple of children, a young son and a nearly teen age girl, always a tricky time for girls even with a mother they love. The children are Greg's, since his wife died in childbirth. But they have a childminder who appears to love the children, with a smidgeon left over for dad...
But it isn't as simple as that, either, oh no! What has Rachel let herself in for? I will say no more about the plot as I want you to read this book and become as involved, against your will, as I did. I normally read thrillers, so you have to realise this book had something special about it to make me keep me so absorbed.
There are some dark moments, that is what makes the book special. And the way the dark moments are dealt with by our two protagonists is very interesting.
I have give the book four stars, because the writing isn't perfect. I felt that the writing changes and becomes dense and rather factual at a point near the end. Maybe there should have been two books, that's what Greg did, after all.
But it was a book to make everyone think, and it will remain in my thoughts a lot in the coming weeks.
And do you know, it was first for me because it actually made me weep a little near the end, this has never happened to me before, so you can see how hard boiled I am! And delicately the writer piles on the agony! Loved it.
All the characters are alive and three dimensional and though they're not all likeable, you can absolutely see and understand their differing points of view. The gradual reveals as to why they are as they are, seem perfectly acceptable. Nothing is contrived to make it fit, nothing added for effect, it all just feels real.
How anyone can write a book like this without having lived it, absolutely beats me but it seems, that's exactly what the author has done. Full marks for the research that must have been gone into it, it's a tremendous piece of writing, 100% entertaining and I really hope they make it into a film, it so deserves it.
Was I disappointed by this? Certainly not! I learned about something I have never encountered before in my personal life. I am glad to now understand (in some small way) a subject that I otherwise may never have taken the time to explore. A real page turner as you second guess the plot.
I thought the characters were well developed and the medical condition very well researched and presented. The story is funny, happy, sad and heart wrenchinly emotional at times and I raced through it even though i didn't want it to end. I will remember this book and will definitely be looking at other books by the same author.
