I had my R1 stolen whilst it was chained in central london bike park bay to a ground anchor. The chain was cut, and by the evidence of the cut links left behind, it wasn't much of a problem. There may be tougher chains out there I don't know, but don't count on this one to beat a determined thief.

Well, it could be one star if my bike is nicked. However this weighty, hexagonal chain appears to be the bee's knees according to the other reviews I have seen and I can believe it. The locking mechanism and chain are as solid as hell and the lock has a proper key. Yes, it weighs a lot (2.7 kilos or 6 pounds) but sling it in your rucksack and it isn't that noticeable. Probably on a long ride it might be more of a problem but if you are not going to let your bike out of your sight then you wouldn't be taking it anyway. For those like me who have to leave their bike at the station each day it gives one belief that the bike will still be there when getting back. By the way 110 cm may seem quite long but the length includes the locking mechanism so there isn't a lot of spare.

I first started riding 3 years ago and my first (and probably most beloved) bike was a Honda PCX scooter. As soon as I bought it I was quite worried about it getting nicked so went about doing my research for security. After reading loads of reviews, I ended up deciding on this chain and an oxford ground anchor.

The chain is a nice heavy, chunky, solid bit of kit which seems to do its job well. As there is parking at work I dont need to take the chain with me so it stays on the ground anchor at home even when I am out on the bike. At just over a meter it is a bit tight to work with which means having to keep the rear tyre very close to the ground anchor. But that is also a plus as there not too much slack for a potential nefarious individual to play with. The lock is solid and opens/closes with a turn of the key. The key cannot be removed from the lock if it is open which is a positive so there is no chance of inadvertently leaving the bike unchained.

The chain has been in service for three years in which time has kept 4 bikes of increasing rear tyre sizes secure. The fabric on the chain is still intact with no noticeable rips or tears. Bear in mind I am an all weather rider and use my bike as a daily commuter so the chain and lock gets used twice a day. The ground anchor is on the driveway so chain is exposed to the elements all year long but still does what it supposed to without fuss. I believe I may have used WD40 on the lock once in the 3 years I have owned the chain but cannot be certain and it certainly wasnt because the lock was sticking etc, was possibly more of a precautionary measure.

The chain possibly helps with insurance quotes (although I dont know how the dark arts of insurance work so may be wrong there) but it has never let me down. Am quite happy with the chain and hope it will continue to do its job for a long time.

1) Good Things:
- It seems to be very safe!
- High quality product
- In the key there is a blue ligh to help you opening the lock at night

2) Bad Things:
- Price
- It is very heavy to take with you all the time. It's a type of lock that you will leave in your garage or somewhere when you are cycling.

Heavy chain, but seems to be the perfect length for my needs. The fabric sleeve was starting to come away from the end, exposing the chain, but I was able to push it back inside. I drape it around the seat post and then it lays on my rear rack and is secured by my axle mounted rubber bungee straps. It does rattle loudly while you ride. I can see no major flaws with this lock. The shackle section is encased in metal and seems extremely strong. I truly believe that no one will mess with my bike with this lock.

Positives - great price for what feels like a very sturdy and weighty lock. It does look like a quality item. Hopefully it will never be "used in anger" with some scum bag trying to steal my bike! I've had mates spend £100's on securing their bikes and they've still had them taken. It looks / feels the part so obviously a good deterrent.

Negatives - may be a bit too short if you intend parking on street and attaching to a lamp post etc. But it's also a bit too long to fit under the average seat and way too heavy to carry on long trips. I attach mine to my bikes rack which isn't ideal especially if you intend touring.

If you're looking for a decent lock to use in your garage or secure area and not one that your going to use for everyday riding / commuting I'd recommend this.

The "Power Link" has a plastic manchette that keeps the protective fabric in place ( we are talking about the tail end of the chain, the part that goes into the locking receiver bit). After two weeks of use, "Power Link" was broken. While unlocking the chain, it must have fallen on the ground and being crushed by the chain's own wight. While the metal parts are all still in place, and the chain still locks properly, we already have parts of the locking mechanism exposed. The fabric around the chain is now not held in place properly and starts degrading already. At this point we are still talking about cosmetic damages but it is disappointing for a product of this price. The retailer who sold me this, discouraged me from sending it in as Abus would usually not grand any of such claims in his experience ... Also you cannot use this chain in combination with those flexy steel cables that you could use to secure your saddle or second wheel. At this point I'm already looking at Kryptonite and their offer where there is no plastic to break off and a mini d-lock that can be combined with additional steel cables, same price ... It all seems to make so much more sense to me at this point ... Anyhow, it still is a very secure chain, albeit with caveats.
