However, if you really are an absolute beginner, then I do recommend this book to you. I think it is a good starting point, and although it will not take you very far into playing the bass, it will give you a good basis.
The instruction is fairly clear and concise, and you should have no trouble getting to grips with the material. Once you complete the lessons, you won't be a pro by any means, but you should be able to move on to more comprehensive material.
On the whole, a good book for the first few weeks/months of playing a bass (from scratch). But, as I say, if you have played a guitar before, then this book will only have limited value to you and you would be better off looking to other resources.
4 out of 5.
And an absolute bargain to boot. Only problem now is what's the next best book to get?
...I was underwhelmed by this book, unfortunately; it's extremely basic and doesn't properly begin with the essentials although it does explain HOW to hold the bass, what pickups are and so on.
On the accompanying CD, several tracks at the start (!?!) illustrate how the bass guitar fits in with a full band on demo tracks - but you can't even hear the bass on them! While you do get these particular bass lines tabbed out to show you what the bassist is playing on these boppy, cheery sounding numbers, to a bass guitar newbie, just doesn't make any sense at all (at this point in their career, that is).
Which is odd as there's no equivalent tracks SANS guitar and keyboards featuring just the rythmn section on their own, for comparison, which would enforce the notion that the bass guitar is a foundation instrument, that provides the rythmic backing for guitars and keyboards, etc.
Anyway, skip to pg.24 of this book and you finally get to the good stuff: the Major scale and your very first Major scale arpeggio!!! However, more detail on arpeggios wouldn't have gone amiss but as thIS books' title boldly proclaims, this IS for absolute beginners wanting to learn how to play bass guitar properly but buying something like Koala Books Complete Learn To Play Bass volume or one of the "Progressive Bass Guitar" volumes other than this Absolute Beginners: Bass Guitar would be money more wisely spent, in my opinion. Which you are perfectly free to ignore,of course.
As with everything else in life, SHOP AROUND! Look at other bass tutor books and if possible, take a friend along who's more knowledgeable about music than you are and do your homework as you don't want to make any mistakes starting out.
This book might just be perfect for you but be warned, it's really basic!
