This is neither a novel nor a role-playing game, but a short high-level description of the background setting for a role-playing game, namely the continent of Abraxas.

You get a brief overview of the setting (a landmass that existed in Earth's ancient past) and sections on the main cities of Abraxas, each of which is loosely based on an ancient civilisation (Egypt, Babylon, etc). There's also a discussion of some of the species inhabiting the world, plus the magical portals that enable travel. The text is punctuated every few pages by excellent Russ Nicholson illustrations.

In terms of value for money, you really can't beat this. Morris and Thomson are unparalleled at their ability to bring out the atmosphere of a fantasy setting, and the book is a pleasure to read. Plus you get lots of Russ Nicholson pictures too, what's not to love! The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars from me is the bad Kindle formatting of those illustrations. They are incredibly detailed and would be fine if viewed full-screen, but each picture has a little block of descriptive text squeezed in beside it, and this shrinks the viewable size of the picture. The text should really be moved to a preceding/following page to let the illustrations shine through.

Anyway, that's no reason not to buy this excellent little book. For fantasy campaign ideas and atmosphere, it's well worth it!
