The editor has selected thirty accounts from a good spectrum of contributors including a Nurse, Able Seaman, Marine, NCOs and officers from the three services and a flag officer. These are grouped by ``event'': the initial invasion; attack on the Ardent; sea air & ground support; sinking of Sir Galahad; Darwin & Goose Green; Mount Longdon; Mount Harriet; Two Sisters; Tumbledown and Command at Sea. Many of these actions have been covered in detail since this book was written in 1985 but seldom with the raw emotion and honesty of the personal accounts here.
Each contributor is introduced, where appropriate, with notes from his or her commendation but it is the individual themselves that is given the time and space to set the context for their involvement. Sometimes we learn what comics they liked to read, or what holidays they enjoyed; other times they are more martial or officious but in every case I felt that I was connecting with the contributor and their story therefore became more poignant.
The editor plays his role to perfection, keeping the book moving but remaining invisible and the book concludes with a glossary and a genuinely useful index. Full marks.
