Peter Hitchens puts another piece of the puzzle in place with this book and when you study the issues in question, then you can only come to the conclusion that the past Legal laws and traditional on foot Police patrols were there for a reason.
If you take away what's called Preventative Policing, local Police stations, and local court systems and pile loads of time-consuming paperwork and pointless new laws, then it's no wonder crime is through the roof in modern Britain today.
What good is scrapping local Police stations and putting the Police in noisy and pretty colored flashing light patrol cars when the crime in question is probably long over with and criminals long gone by the time police get there ??.
Again, politicians wonder why the public has lost all faith in them and the Police when they play the game of social reform with public institutions without thinking of the results that will surely follow once they have finished.

Review
Hitchens is both wise and brave to call for a revival of morality and responsibility -- Joshua Rozenberg, Daily Telegraph
'The issues Hitchens is addressing are important and his willingness to challenge shibboleths is often illuminating ... he is rightly scathing about attempts to deal with crime by raising the conviction rate.' -- John Willman, Financial Times
'It is a pleasure to read a lucid polemic by a man who is so obviously more interested in the welfare of the common man than in the approbation of his peers' Theodore Dalrymple, Sunday Telegraph'[This book] should not be ignored... there are several pressing challenges to liberals and the left in particular. -- Jonathan Freedland, Guardian

Book Description
Retitled, revised and repackaged in B-format paperback: 'Marvellous... Passionate, intelligent and thrillingly written and, above all, it is true. This is what it feels like to live in Britain today' Bryan Appleyard, Sunday Times
About the Author
Peter Hitchens is a well-known and controversial commentator, a columnist for the Mail on Sunday and a frequent broadcaster. His first book, The Abolition of Britain, made an impact on both Left and Right with its argument that Britain had chosen the wrong future in the 1960s, and that Thatcherism had not only failed to halt the moral and cultural revolution launched by the Left, but had in many ways accelerated it.

It is a terrible shame that this insightful , indeed prescient , book recieved but a fraction of the attention it deserved. Britain , and British liberty, have been substantially disfigured by the public's failure to heed the warning here given. It remains all too relevant and may advise those who at last begin to see the unfolding catastrophe

Highly recommended this book. Feels like it could have been written yesterday, tapping into the political correctness debate and Britain's crime epidemic

Hitchens makes an impeccably argued case for the restoration of the Rule of Law and for prisons to be a place to be feared.
When I was young and foolish, I loathed every word that Hitchens wrote. My principles are largely the same now, 20 years later, but I now find myself agreeing with much of his output. Hitchens is possibly the most misunderstood man in the UK. Maybe "misunderstood" is not the right word. In order to misunderstand one must first listen, and that seems to the problem with most who take umbrage at Hitchens' writing. I suppose it's possible that they get no further than the headlines to his articles, which are normally not written by the columnist themselves.

Very well reasoned book that explains the mess that our PC politicians have put us in (through no fault of our own). Compelling reading.

Those who enjoyed The Abolition of Britain will find this book a “second favorite.” It’s more restricted in its scope, and lacks some of the wittier prose, but it’s only after you read both of these books that you will understand the totality of the British - and to some extent Western - tragedy that Hitchens tackles.

The book deserves 5 stars. I am deducting one star because the Kindle edition contains several typos. Not just different typos, but the *same* mistake made repeatedly throughout the entire book, as if the typist and/or proof-reader was actually under the impression that "signifcant" was the correct spelling! Errors this obvious simply shouldn't appear in any book, let alone one so short.
The content itself has spells which are "heavy going" in terms of statistics and dates, but for the most part it is a fascinating and compelling read - and I cannot recommend highly enough how we as a people need to raise our awareness of the issues discussed here. Certainly the liberal elite in parliament and the press need to. Make no mistake, this is not comfortable reading, and is in fact somewhat depressing when one realises the state our beautiful country has sunken to. I did not finish reading this book with a sense of optimism. I can only hope that it's not too late to reverse the steep decline and say 'no' to our inept and cowardly leaders.
