A classic of American cinema. Very moving biopic of the rise to power from rural obscurity of Abe Lincoln.

The title of review might put some off but to find fine acting linked to a good & moving story from Hollywoods heyday is a refreshing change these days
Massey & Gordon are quite brilliant in their roles not at all stereotyped or in Lincoln's case glorified but a believable portrayal of a great & flawed man. Sherwoods script is very good with the supporting cast generally good. Quality of print esp. soundtrack excellent.

Since Danny Day-Lewis won his Oscar for his performance as Lincoln, I wanted to view other performers in the same role and Raymond Massey performance was also outstanding......

Like many biographical films from The old days this is informative but has no critical judgement of Lincoln, still it was well acted and interesting

5.0 out of 5 stars This movie is no.... 'Shot in the Dark' 27 Mar. 2017

Scary ....Raymond Massey IS Lincoln. The face ...the look and the old B&W film quality brings and almost..'actual footage'..quality to this production. Although simplistic and corny at times, this film has a deeper emotional and spiritual quality to it. Is is a movie and was produced as ..entertainment.. it still has historical value. It shows the pride that the American people had in our country in the early and mid 20th century. Lincoln is presented in an almost reverenced manner. Very well done, better than..'Young Abe Lincoln' with Henry Fonda which in and of itself is also a VERY well done movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Massey IS Lincoln 1 Feb. 2013

Excellent portrayal of the 16th President from youth to his election in 1860. Massey captures Lincoln as a man, unsure and filled with doubt, not as the God-like figure that Lincoln has come to be viewed. Ruth Gordon, "Ma" from the Clint Eastwood fight movies of the 1970s, is outstanding as Mary Lincoln. You wonder why on earth Lincoln married her as she is very difficult to live with and pushes him constantly toward his "destiny". If this movie needs a criticism, it is that it is not close-captioned. A family member has trouble hearing and that is a real benefit to have those subtitles. It is also good for those who are not English speakers to have foreign titles or languages. The film has neither, It is English sound only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not to be overlooked 20 April 2001

This film is the perfect film recreation of Abraham Lincoln. Raymond Massey is brilliantly cast as young Mr. Lincoln. Whenever I think of Lincoln films, I think of Raymond Massey as the one and only Lincoln. The overall casting is superb and the story is exceptional and is well presented. There are a number of memorable points in the film. Lincoln's first introduction to politics is amusing. I tend to think that Ruth Gordon's portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln is right on. Lincoln rarely stands up to her in her critiscm of thier lifestyle, his clothes, etc., but when he does, it is extremely powerful.
Massey doesn't do this on his own. The ensemble cast is exceptional, from the teacher who helps him improve his education, to the local judge, to his law partner and Stephen A. Douglas. All these people help make this film the exceptional story that it is.
If there is one film about Lincoln to recommend, this would be my first pick.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good script but not cast well 2 Jan. 2017

Having just returned from visiting Lincoln's Springfield House, I was interested in seeing this classic movie. It was well done, black and white, good script, but not cast well for some of the characters. Raymond Massey was very good as Lincoln. Ruth Gordon as Mary was a failure. She was too harsh and mean. It was overkill. I never saw such over acting even in a vintage movie. However, the movie was worth watching, and I would recommend it. It's a classic for a reason.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Honest Abe 10 Jan. 2015

One of the best Americana pieces from the golden age of Hollywood, based on the play by Robert Sherwood. Lincoln was a part that character actor Raymond Massey was born to play; physically he seems to be the spitting image of Abe himself, but his demeanor and personality are perfectly suited as well. Ruth Gordon is superb too as Mary Todd. The film covers most of Lincoln's life; from that of a young man on the frontier in 1830 to assuming the presidency in 1861. Certainly the dramatic license of the script is reasonable enough to create an accurate picture of the man; and the period atmosphere is excellent.
