From within and from without the world of 'Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi's (1641-1731) life and thought, Akkach creatively analyses the theme of Islam and the Enlightenment. Despite its relatively small size, the book is comprehensive. Extending far beyond a critical review of the legacy of a key figure of the Islamic enlightenment, who was contemporary of key figures of the European Enlightenment, the book presents the parameters of Akkach's highly original project, which seeks to understand the roots of modernity in the Islamic world. Presented succinctly for the first time, many themes discussed in this book deserve to be the topics of independent research projects.
