Product Description
This USB to TTL serial adapter is based on the high quality and very popular FT232RL chipset and is an excellent way to connect TTL serial devices to a PC through a USB port.
Unlike most USB to TTL serial adapters, this adapter supports both 5V and 3.3V operation. Simply set the jumper as required to choose between 5V and 3.3V as labelled on the board.
The adapter come with a right-angle connector fitted allowing you to use it straight away. If you need to access any of the other inputs or outputs of the FT232RL, all the useful signals are provided as through-hold solder pads; ideal for use with straight headers into a breadboard.
This adapter supports the following operating systems
- Windows 2000 (32 bit)
- Windows XP (32 and 64 bit)
- Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit)
- Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit)
- Windows 8 (32 and 64 bit)

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 October 2020Number Of Items: 1Verified PurchaseArrived on time and packed in a sturdy cardboard box containing an antistatic envelope surrounding the product itself. The product was quickly put into service flashing software onto an ESP32-CAM board which lacks the on-board USB-serial converter that most of today's microcontroller boards include.
I plugged the module into a USB port on a Windows 10 laptop and, after a short delay, it showed up as COM7, no driver installation needed. Drivers for Windows, Mac and Linux are easily found on the Internet if required.
I connected the serial and power lines from the module to the ESP board with DuPont wires and shorted out a link to put the ESP into download mode, then compiled and loaded the software via the Arduino environment. All went without a hitch, despite some of these ESP boards having a reputation for being tricky to flash.
Cut/paste of one of the messages on Arduino console:
"Wrote 902304 bytes (487502 compressed) at 0x00010000 in 11.9 seconds (effective 604.1 kbit/s)... "
Conclusion: Does the job well, useful addition to the gadget toolbox.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2018Number Of Items: 1Verified PurchaseExcellent product.
The reason I gave it 5 stars is it comes with pins already soldered and it has a simple jumper to switch between 3.3v and 5v as opposed to most FTDI where it's a solder jumper.
It worked great once I figured out the mini usb cable I had lying around only had VCC wired.
It was plug and play on Win 10 64 bit.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 November 2024Number Of Items: 5Verified PurchaseI bought a pack of these to flash an ESP32-based Sonoff smart relay, after having tried a CH340G-based adaptor that turned out to be defective. The first FT232RL adaptor I tried worked fine, and was detected automatically as a COM port by Windows 11.
Pros: A jumper lets you select 3.3V or 5V data output, so you don't fry delicate 3.3V devices. All the main comms lines are broken out to headers (RTS & CTS, as well as the normal RX, TX, Vcc and GND), and there are lots of handy through-hole connections for other lines.
Cons: No Dupont or USB cables included, and the connector is Mini USB, rather than the more modern Micro or USB-C, so it's harder to find an appropriate cable. The screen print on the board is very close to the header and jumper block, so it's hard to see which cable is which. Although the adapter worked fine for flashing the Sonoff device, it couldn't supply enough power to allow the ESP32 to fire up a WiFi connection.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2024Number Of Items: 1Verified PurchaseUsed on two Arduino Pro Mini boards and worked perfectly. See photo for how I wired it. The CTS pin (Clear To Send) isn't required for the Pro Mini. Don't forget to set the 3.3 / 5v jumper on it to the correct voltage for your board before plugging it in!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 July 2020Number Of Items: 5Verified PurchaseMy use case was to program the ESP32 CAM Module
I found the 3.3V line on these modules a bit underpowered to program the ESP32 CAM module (brown outs and errors), but there is a simple solution: Set the jumper to 5V and connect the power output to the 5V line on the ESP32 CAM. My guess is the ESP32 CAM uses a bit more power than intended for this module to supply.
Otherwise a great product, does exactly what it is intended to.

but other than that perfect !.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 July 2022Number Of Items: 3Verified PurchaseThese devices work to connect Arduino Pro Minis via USB to a host PC.
However, the documentation suggests crossing over TXD and RXD lines, as might be expected. However, this is not so. TXD to TXD and RXD to RXD works.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2023Number Of Items: 3Verified PurchaseI needed one of these to interface to a Motorola GM350 low-band VHF transceiver to reprogram it as it turned out one of the frequencies was incorrect, this did the job just fine on a Linux host machine running Virtualbox in turn running Windows 3.1 (the software for programming these Motorola radios is pretty ancient), now my radio is transmitting and receiving correctly on the 4-metre Amateur radio band whereas before it was transmitting on one frequency and receiving on another, plus I still have two of these devices spare for other projects, bargain
