I bought this to replace my Virgin hub 4 with the 1GB package. The hub 4 WiFi signal wasn't so good and I had to use the virgin booster pods to get usable WiFi speeds in certain areas. As well as that I would have devices being dropped and latency spikes even when using an ethernet cable when playing online games.

The Asus router was a bit of a pain to set up but I think that was mainly the fault of the hub4 as it wasn't going into modem mode properly. The webpage for the Asus router is a lot faster than virgins and has tons more settings and information, I did have to update the firmware on the Asus router when I recieved it but that was simple enough.

Since having the router the WiFi signal is noticibly stronger and when standing next to the hub the WiFi speed on my s22 ultra increased by around 100mbps. Overall it's just a lot more stable. The only bad thing I didn't know before buying was you can't use virgins extender pods with the router but that's obviously no fault of Asus. I got it like new from the Amazon warehouse for almost half price so it was a bargain for me.

I am on virgin media, i have the hub 3 i needed a router that would provide better signal in the aveage size semi-detached 2 bed house we have thick brick wall not plasterboard the hub 3 could'nt provide stable signal. Now this asus RT-AC85P probley has slightly better range than the hub 3 so i was slightly disappointed with that fact however you can tell that the beam forming technology in this router is doing its job because even though the signal strength drops in the same places (not by as much) as the hub 3 it suddenly picks up and the speeds are by far better. The hub 3 would lose connection and speeds would of been diabolical overall i recommend as an upgrade it does do a better job than the hub 3 but if you have a bigger budget go for the next moddel up just for the extra range, and maybe wifi 6.

I was really happy with this product for a few years now, decent WiFi signal, very stable (hardly ever needed restarting compared to the Virgin box) and quite feature rich. However I just upgraded from Virgin 350MB to Virgin's new Gigabit service (with hub 4.0).

When testing speeds directlly plugged into the virgin modem I get 900MB/s down, when turning the Virgin hub to modem mode and plugging the ethernet cable into the Asus router I get a max of 410MB/s down.

Despite being advertised as having a gigabit WAN port on the asus router it clearly can't handle the throughput of faster internet speeds. Updated the firmware and raised a ticket with asus support, but looks like this will be going in the bin very shortly!

Unhappy with the Virginmedia box so I bought this to solve the problems. This was a good choice, I now have excellent, stable wifi coverage. The web interface is rather clunky imho. The only niggle I have so far is that I had an external HDD handy so I connected that. All seems to work ok but I can't seem to get write access even though I've configured this via the interface. Probably my fault but I'm not a total novice

Bought Asus because I wanted VPN client. Disappointed that it has to be either On for every device or Off - ideally would be able to choose some On and some Off. Not least because the processor struggles to cope with the load that VPN imposes - 2x HD live streams plus some other usage seems to be too much

This router has performed perfectly since the day I set it up. I have a Virgin media router and as with most people it's located on one side of the house so the wifi signal was weak on the opposite side. I just changed the Virgin hub to modem mode and ran through the simple setup. The new router is located in the centre of the house and the improvement in performance is huge. Some other reviewers have pointed out limited that this device's firmware has limited features but I don't think that all but a few users would find anything missing that they would need.
