first impressions:
- display is superb. colors look great almost from every angle. fhd resolution should be sufficient for any type of work (have not tried my business applications yet)
- heavier than expected and bigger than my old ibm z60m ... not for 'on the move' use really
- external subwoofer.. nice, but only useful in desktop mode (with laptop sitting on the desk)
- built-in speakers are very good
- windows 8.1 is ****. waiting for w10 upgrade
- internal hdd is medium spec, need to replace it in the future
- dvd drive - bluray would be nice to have
- keyboard.. average. IBM one was better.. no keylight
as my criteria were 'i5 with good IPS FHD display, good build, primarily for home use', im fully satisfied with the machine so far

update after one month:
- medium-heavy gaming is smooth (fallout 3, half-life and similar old games)
- productive use - OK. FHD display still is not a match to screens I use at work (1600x1200). I got 4 of them connected to my office PC, but biggest problem is that 1200 lines is visibly more convenient than 1080 - text is easier to fit/read/edit.
performance-wise, i was not able to max neither cpu or memory yet
- when idling or under low use at night fan could be heard and that is annoying. looking for fan-control software to switch it off under low load.
- sometimes humming is heard from speakers (when no sounds are played), not sure yet whats causing it (radio waves?)
- sometimes wifi/internet gets stuck. but not blaming laptop yet, could be interference with neighbours or BB provider.
- battery lifetime - 3-5 hours. not great. if you need longer battery life, get something else (ultrabook with intergated GPU. actually I was looking for one, but got this machine, as i was not able to find one with ips fhd screen for that price)
- the way windows 8 using hdd is very annoying. looking for decent hybrid drive, as apparently its not possible to fit mSATA SSD in this laptop
I took the plunge and ordered, banking on Amazon's returns service if the laptop didn't match with expectation. I already had an SSD to replace the internal drive (which was straightforward) so wasn't particularly bothered about the size of the internal drive, but the 1TB has now become an external unit for my XBOX One anyway.
So after almost 2 months, the good:
- The i5 CPU is great. I don't care for battery life (or weight, really) as I don't really travel with the laptop so went for performance vs portability.
- The GTX graphics are good, too - gaming performance is decent and there's no real sign of stress on the laptop. It gets warm rather than hot and the noise is acceptable.
- The 8GB RAM is perfectly adequate for Windows 8.1 64-bit and plenty of associated software (Visual Studio etc).
- The screen is good. Not quite as vibrant as the RGB screen on my Dell but viewing angles are good, as are light levels. It's a matte panel so is better in terms of dealing with reflection, but it isn't quite as vibrant.
- The keyboard is good - it features a full number pad and is comfortable to type on.
The bad (or rather, the 'not so good'):
- The sound is pretty poor. Without attaching the external subwoofer it is noticeably duller and quieter than the Harman Kardon speakers in my Dell. With the sub attached it's marginally better but still not what I'd term as good. This isn't really of any concern for my usage though (and really in general, I find laptop speakers are rubbish) - I use headphones or a bluetooth link to my hifi and the sound performance in these situations is excellent.
- The keyboard isn't backlit, which is a shame as there are models in this series with that feature. It's not a huge problem though, just a shame it's been omitted.
- The touchpad is pretty poor. It's one of the 'big button' types and rather than having a dedicated left/right button it uses the lower areas of the pad. Personally I'd prefer buttons, especially given the pad itself is large enough to have accommodated them.
Windows 8.1 is perfectly fine, although I admit I installed the Pro version on my SSD rather than restored the version that comes with the device as it lacks BitLocker encryption. It's very fast to boot (under 3 seconds, if you ignore the time it takes to type the unlock password) and in general is good to use. The lack of a touch screen is unimportant really, getting around with the mouse is just as quick.
There is no restoration media included, but you can create your own via Windows. Asus installs a bunch of utilities by default (gesture control, cloud backup etc) that I didn't re-install once I'd put the SSD in but if you so wish you can get them from Asus' website.
Overall I don't think you can get a better laptop at this price - provided your requirements fit the bill. If you want portability and better battery life, look elsewhere as this is not the laptop for you. If you want a laptop that will get things done quickly and allow you to have a decent gaming experience then this is a very good choice. I've had none of the issues described in SergK's review - my wireless performance is good (I live in an old house with thick walls and this performs no better/worse than the Dell or any phone/tablet we have), I can't really say I've noticed any humming (and I've used the device in a room, alone, with no other sound) and the fan is pretty quiet in my experience. Perhaps we have different expectations or perhaps my unit is unaffected... who knows. But given I couldn't replace or better my Dell for this kind of money with any other brand (although PCSpecialist come quite close) I'm very happy with this as a replacement.
Gripes....Why no Blu Ray drive? Cost between a standard DVD drive and Blu Ray read drive, is minimal. A DIY upgrade is simple enough to do, as long as the new drive...blu ray combo or blu ray writer is of the correct size at 9.5mm (12.5mm or so called "slimline" drives will not fit). The drive facia plate and rear mounting bracket requires changing over.
Wireless card is N.....why not the newer AC standard version, for future proofing?....difference in cost,is minimal.
I have upgraded the drive to an SSD. Big improvement. You can fit an SSD hybrid drive, if a lot of storage is required. In both cases it's necessary to clone everything to the new drive. Samsung include migration software.Very easy to do but an external 2.5 inch USB caddy would also be required for the cloning procedure.
