I bought this in the vain hope that Asus, as a relatively modern/up to date brand might have done something to overhaul router admin panels and software, so that it wasn't as outdated as the usual gubbins you get. To some extent that's true - the login page is quite web 2.0-ey and the layout/colours are quite funky. Some nice status screens, and the wizards seem to work OK. It's as feature rich as any other. This is a reasonable compromise between a completely unconfigurable 'home' user device (that you'd get as a freebie) that just does what it thinks you will want it to do and won't let you do anything else unless you bash it through telnet and a full on infinitely configurable 'need to be a CompSci grad' level type effort such as a Draytek where it has every option under the sun in a bewildering array of TLAs. 4g/3g connection seemed to be pretty good and when connected via ethernet internet access was quick.

A great feature of this router (which you don't get on many) is a hardware button to control wifi on/off. But beyond that the wifi seemed pretty flaky. For a starter, this was replacing a Technicolor that I got for free from my ISP and whilst limited did manage to cover my house with wifi. The ASUS couldn't manage it and as you got further away performance seemed to drop noticeably. It's dual band but if you want to disable e.g., 5ghz then it's buried in a screen 4 pages deep under... but then whinges at you if the config for the rest of the 5g network is e.g., insecure (if you didn't set a password etc.) even though it's disabled. Also, it took an absolute age to update a config or reboot. But what did it for me was random lockups on the router/wifi. All would be working fine but then it would randomly hang.

It's a great product for me to replace my landline broadband with. I just got a data sim, popped it in this router and with minimum fuss it started working and works fine.

Having been a cable broadband user for years and paying £30 a month for a Virgin Broadband Only connection,I started wondering if I wasn't better off looking for 4g mobile broadband.I 'm lucky enough to live in a fully serviced 4g area of the UK.Being a cheapskate,I didn't like the price of this gadget but figured if I could get my hands on one and if the 4g experiment was a failure I could just use it to continue using my cable broadband.Well,Im now typing this review courtesy of a strong 4 g signal provided by the EE sim I popped into the sim slot in the ASUS router after splashing out on £5 worth of data(yes ,you can buy £5 worth if you look carefully enough and avoid ticking the ££10,15,20 boxes:it's the empty field on the right of the EE webpage)Delighted at my frugality,I then swapped the EE for my own mobile 3 sim and voila, a strong signal emitted and I was
well chuffed that I could access my mobile data allowance without any messing.I ve found it easy to set up and use.(I'm nearly 60 years old and am no geek so if I can manage it,I guess most people can)The only caveat Ill put in is really about how much data you really need and whether you can justify buying this for the full price when you could just use your mobile as a hotspot.I do not know yet if say,you have an all-you-can-eat data contract with a mobile, that the router bypasses the tethering restrictions placed in your contract. If anyone knows for sure, please enlighten me or maybe the answer is in one of the reviews below that I haven't got round to reading. If it does bypass tethering and you are weighted down with a big price cable broadband contract that's about to expire, then in my opinion this device or similar can save you some serious money over a couple of years or so and pay for itself within a couple of months. That really is why an old cheapskate like me took the plunge and bought it.So far,so good.

I have found previous ASUS products to be reliable and easy-to-use, so I chose this router over others. I did not find the set up for this router to be intuitive at all. The set up process did not pick up my mobile broadband provider (EE) and by the time I had completed the set up process, the wifi password had been replaced with an enterprise login which I hadn't set up. The instructions provided are not much help either. I ended up returning it and connecting a Huawei Unlocked E3372 LTE/4G 150 Mbps USB Dongle - Black dongle to my Asus RT-N66U - 900Mbps Dual Band Wireless N Router, Gigabit LAN/WAN, 2x USB, Print FTP UPnP VPN Server, IPv6, 8x SSID, Wireless 3D HD content streaming, 3 Year Warranty router which was an absolute doddle to set up. The combined cost of the dongle and the RT-N66U was less than the cost of this router and provides greater functionality.
