Manufacturer's Description
The Archos 101 internet tablet is a tablet whose choice you'll be proud of. You'll have in your hands the best of the highly desirable Android technology with a large, high-resolution 10.1 inch display and a slim and light profile.
Beyond containing your window into the Internet and your HD multimedia, your device is completely customisable with a world of apps to make it your personal tablet. With more people looking toward this new trend in Internet tablets, Archos has carefully matched the power of the Android platform to a seductive design that will have heads turning. With the adjustable leg stand, you will always have the best position to tap out your emails, view a movie or enjoy the photo frame application. Whether you're looking at the Archos 101 in landscape or portrait mode, your pictures will look bright and crystal clear on the high-resolution 1024 x 600 resolution display. It doesn't matter if you have it in your hands or if it's standing on a table, you will always be impressed by the quality of the screen. Android is the application framework developed by Google for connected mobile devices, coming with a full pack of connected apps such as a web browser and email application.
The 5 home screens of the Android user interface on the Archos 101 allow advanced personalisation; icons can be placed, moved or erased with just a flick of a finger. Thanks to the home screen widgets, users can instantly access their favourite applications. Basically, this is what you see on your product screen, but ten times bigger. With it's TV output, the Archos 101 internet tablet displays every Android screen on your wide screen TV. You can then browse your files or the Internet from your couch. And guess how immersed in your 3D games you could be using the device as a steering-wheel.
Want to be connected anywhere?. Just plug your mobile phone (equipped with 3.5G and Bluetooth technology), simply pair it up to your Archos 101 internet tablet via Bluetooth or even via USB cable. This will give you easy access to the Internet directly on your device anytime and anywhere. There's no need to pay an extra fee when you already have a data service plan. The Archos 101 internet tablet has Samba and UPnP protocols - this means that you play your movies, videos, and photos on your Archos 101, but these files are really located on your computer in another room. You don't need to store everything on your tablet to enjoy viewing it on your tablet.

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Screen responds to touch when it wants to, mostly not, or even worse, responds when you don't want it to. I.E. trying to scroll in any direction is a joke, as it would either decide that you had pressed on an option when you were simply scrolling up and down a screen or simply ignore you. Second time I accessed the included manual the browser crashed.
Gave up trying to access my wireless network as each time, however carefully I tried, it kept acting as if I had pressed 'OK' half way through entering my Wi-Fi key. I have a nearly four year old HP tablet (TX2500) with a resistive touch screen that knocks the spots off this supposedly superior tech for response to touch. And to add insult to injury, it refused to recognise any of my SD cards, even a brand new Sandisk 16 GB I bought from the same page as the Archos Amazon page.
So after about two and a half hours messing about trying to get it to work as I wanted and failing, I just gave up, packed it all up and asked for RMA details.
BTW, it also gets surprisingly warm on the back of the left hand side even when not doing anything much. Slightly uncomfortably so if you leave it plugged in charging while using it.
I would have persevered with the other irritations if the screen had a better and more accurate response and it had recognised my SD cards, but those two made the unit useless for my needs. You will also need to carry around a cleaning cloth as the screen messes very easily and quickly and noticeably, even with clean hands.
Seems I will have to start looking again, either that or simply plump for another laptop type tablet, like my HP TX2500. Oh well, at least with Amazon's easy returns policy, all I have wasted is some time.
I received the tablet today having bought it second-hand, the volume up button is a bit faulty but that's by-the-by, not the manufacturers (in this instance) fault. After the research I had done beforehand I knew Android Market/ Google play could be installed in a few easy steps and with the aid of a Youtube video it was installed VERY easily. I might also add that the Tablet currently is registered to the past user - I tried the Archos site and, to be frank, it wasn't much use (I didn't have the necessary credentials to speak to Customer Service, ie the registration details) so I contacted their Facebook page and although their answer was to phone the customer service hotline, they replied very promptly and I felt better about Archos for it.
Now, to the product itself. Out of the box it looks fantastic. The tablet is now a couple of years old but I still had a bit of a wow factor when facing it. Due to it being secondhand (perhaps) the responsiveness of switching it on wasn't great (and concerned me a little). I have since charged it and found that there is a little lag in button pressing, but not that much. As an Android user (I have a Samsung Galaxy S2) I am very impressed with the hardware connectivity and codecs on offer. I plugged my USB stick into it and was viewing pics and listening to music in an instant. I think special mention should be given to Archos in this respect. I have read reviews which describe it as 'utilitarian' and although I of course agree with this, I must say it paints a somewhat bleak picture of the Tablet - which as I've already mentioned, is not the impression I have of it at all. I think these connectivity options (USB/ Micro HDMI etc) are an absolute godsend - and are tucked way neatly and subtley at the side/end (depending on how you orient the device).
The sound (despite my volume up button not working "grrr") I was very surprised with. Very pleasantly surprised.
I do have to agree with the majority of reviews in some respects - but with some qualification.
The camera - shockingly bad. Do not, DO NOT buy this tablet if you intend to use it for photo taking or filming. It is a monstrosity. Grainy, horrible pics that remind you of early webcams.
The screen. It's not a high quality screen. I have recently been promoted and have upgraded the screens in my home (monitor/ TV/ Phone) and so there's a little juxtaposition at play here. However, this screen is not a top shelf screen. More modern, more expensive models leave this Tablet in their wake. That is not to say it's poor. It really isn't. I have a lovely picture of my daughter proudly displayed as the wallpaper, and it seems to handle the hi-def resolution very well - at least in Photo's respect. I read in one review that you can see the grid of the screen (the review was critical of this point) but I found you can only see the grid at a very odd angle and so it isn't a problem in real terms. The other slight fault regarding the screen is it's responsiveness to touch. It is very competent, but when playing Wordfeud (lots of drag and drop) I did notice a significant difference between the Archos and higher end devices (my phone - Samsung Galaxy S2). Routine functions I found to be very easy on the Archos though.
The viewing angle. To be honest, I thought this would be the least of my worries from the reading I had done. I'd say it's not a problem, but if I were to nit pick I'd say I wish it was better. This is especially true when holding the Tablet in portrait mode (one of the primary reasons for me buying the Tablet was to read (CBR/CBZ) graphic novels on). Having never used a tablet before, I have to say I was mightily impressed reading graphic novels/ magazines on the Archos (despite the minor nag of poor viewing angle) but I do have to say, it might niggle at you (and if you were expecting more than I was) could possibly annoy you.
This brings me to my major point. I bought this Tablet knowing it was no competition for the iPad/ Samsung Galaxy Tab (I'd considered waiting for the Kindle Fire but I felt the 7" screen wasn't too much of an improvement on my phone). I bought this Tablet for £150 (and despite the many time mentioned faulty button - which wasn't advertised) am over the moon with it. If you want a state of the art tablet then this is not for you. I wanted something to read my comics on and have something the girlfriend can look on facebook/ browse the web whilst sat in front of the TV and this is perfect - considering the price range. This is not a fair reflection of the device though. The connectivity options are amazing - plug a USB into it, are you kidding me? Run a HDMI out...
To conclude, this offers a shed load of options. You may argue it's a jack of all trades but master of none. I'd say, just about true. Aesthetically (screen performance) it isn't the best. There are lags from button presses (hardware and software) but the codec and hardware support is bloody immense. I think it has genuinely tried to push the envelope but has come up short in some areas. HOWEVER, I honestly believe that if you are spending a good £200 less for a 10" Tablet than the market leaders you can not realistically expect more. I am massively impressed with this tablet and I give it 4 stars for value for money combined with performance (although I deeply like the Archos, 3 stars for performance would be accurate).
My whole review I suppose is predicated on the fact you get the Tablet for a reasonable price. I do not feel its value exceeds £200 in today's market, but if you can pick one up - as I did - for around £150 then you'll have got yourself somewhat of a bargain.
