It’s Smart To Be Proactive

The best way to keep your aquarium clean is to maintain good water quality. This will keep your fish strong and vibrant, as well as preventing disease.

How Do I Maintain A Healthy Environment?

It is important to test your aquarium water weekly to verify good quality in addition to a bi-weekly partial water change of no more than 25% to help reduce toxic buildup, remove debris the filter missed, and replenish the oxygen available to fish.

How Do I Take Good Care Of My Aquarium?

Feed and observe fish daily
Test water quality weekly

Restore your ecosystem monthly

Feed Your Fish Daily

Feed your fish twice daily only the amount of food they can eat in 2 to 3 minutes depending on the species. Some fish such as bottom feeders and algae eaters will need up to 30 minutes to 2 hours. Overfeeding and low quality nutrition cause unconsumed food and more excrement which cloud water and raise harmful ammonia levels, possibly leading to fish loss. Take time to observe fish and the water temperature to ensure they are active and healthy.

Test Water Quality Weekly

In order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. Most common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH. All may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API Master Test Kits or API 5-IN-1 Test Strips. It is also a good time to add API Stress Zyme to keep your aquarium and gravel clean.

Change 25% Water Every 2 Weeks

In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API Stress Coat.

Restore Your Ecosystem Monthly

It is important to change your filter media and clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API QUICK START to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.

Melafix Killed my fish, and made others Worse.

Do not by this product. Read up on Melafix before you even consider buying it.
I had 6 guppies 4 nguentheri Killifish, Neon Tetra's, White clouded Minnows 2 albino corydoras, 1 peppered and a bronze.
Used this product and within a day we lost a guppy. We didn't think it was related to the product at first. So we did a water test. Everything came back healthy. Everyone was fine for a while, Then came the second dose of Melafix. Within hours another guppy died. Then we had a male minnow that died few hours later. We had our killifish in that tank too. So we removed those. Put them in their own tank. Moved 4 guppies into a medical tank. One was so sick it eventually died. We were left with 3 females. The effects of the melafix were so bad, that i've also lost 2 of my Killifish, Leaving a male Who's still poorly and may not make it, and a female, who so far looks fine. We also lost a corydora.
We moved everyone Out of the tank downstairs, Done 90% water change to try and get rid of the melafix. After that, The remaining Minnows, Tetra's Thrived. The guppies and cory's that were now upstairs in a med tank under constant watch, Thrived.
My fish, Before i used this product weren't sick, They had damaged fins due to my killifish having a nibble. So to help repair those fins, I used this. Infact the second this was used, it caused way more problems then it tried to Help. Apart from issues with the fins, thanks to my killi's, They had nothing wrong with them and were healthy.
All my fish now, Since i've did several water changes to get rid of melafix from my tank, are thriving. Never again will i use this product.

Fantastic product

Best fish medication I've ever used. I had a cherry barb with a wound on his side which had started to grow fungus. I'd heard good things about Melafix so I thought I'd give it a go. The fungus disappeared straight away and the wound healed nicely, now I can hardly tell him apart from his companions. Very easy to use, just calculate how much you need for your tank (5ml for every 38 litres of water), add this amount every day for a week, then do a 25% water change. Couldn't be simpler. Smells nice too! Just a couple of things to watch out for - apparently this stuff can reduce the oxygen levels in the water, so you will need to make sure you have plenty of aeration i.e. airstone or venturi. Secondly, a lot of users have reported that Melafix is fatal to pencilfish. There is nothing on the bottle about this, because the manufacturers have carried out tests in response to these reports and did not find any conclusive evidence that it is harmful to pencilfish. But nevertheless a lot of users have reported this problem. But as long as you don't have pencilfish in your tank you should be fine.

This is a natural product that helps you to keep your aquariums harmful bacteria in control, as well makes the water smell pleasant (do not mistake it with a perfume though, it is a natural oil and smells like VapoRub or Olbas). Used even when my fish had fry - fry is now reaching adulthood with no problems.

Made no difference to my Goldfish

The product was easy to use and i used it in conjunction with Pimafix. Many people seem to swear by this stuff. Unfortunately hasn`t really helped by Goldfish at all. One fish has a lump that might be a tumour so i guess sadly nothing might help that and another has some scale damage and a raggedy tail. I have four fish almost 5 years old now, big tank, regular water changes etc so i was hopeful that this might at least help the fish with the scale damage and ragged tail. Hasn`t done any harm, all 4 fish still alive and the snails and plants were unaffected by it.

If you have tropical fish, you should always have this in the cupboard.
It works really well as a general tonic and I put some in the tank whenever I see the fish looking a little lethargic and at the first sign of any kind of disease.
Combines well with other more specific treatments if required.

3 of my pond fish were badly infected and had sores all over their bodies, one had just died, a very large coy carp. I used the whole bottle over a period of 7 days and all the sores are virtually gone after 2 weeks. brilliant will be buying more to keep in stock in case it happens again

I love this product, it is excellent, peps the fish up and is almost a cure all. Why the 2 stars? The size of this bottle for the price. I ordered this one because it was delivered next day and I had a problem with my fish, when it came I couldn't believe how small it was, I knew by looking at the ml it was small but didn't realise just how small. I also ordered a larger one which was cheaper from another supplier but said dspatched in 3-4 days, that came within 2 days! Great product 118ml at £7.11 - overpriced !
