Outstandingly easy & breathtakingly effective

Outstandingly easy & breathtakingly effective
This is the first ever UPS I have purchased or used. After reading all the reviews (which I do religiously), this appeared to be perfect for the system I have. After recent power cuts, various spikes & periods of "on-&-off's", it was time to 'bite the bullet' & get something to protect my very expensive system (instead of the standard power surge sockets I already had). My system is a self-built, AMD 6-core system & cost me more money than I would be willing to pay for again. Together with my 20" Panasonic T.V / Monitor, 1TB external drive & Logitech Air Mouse - all worthy of full protection. For such a heavy package, it was delivered within 4 days - very good considering I got FREE Super Saver delivery (Yet another great service by Amazon). The connection took about 2 hours, but this is only because I was wary about the connection of the battery, which, as it turned out, was very simple. I also had to untangle all the cables at the back of my desk, label all the plugs so I knew which was to be plugged into either the UPS or Power-surge sockets. I specifically took time to read all the instructions, options & features of this exceptional UPS. The Set Up: The battery cover just slides off, tilt the unit until the battery starts to slide out, connect the short cable to the battery terminal (there are a few small sparks, but nothing too scary), & slide the battery cover plate back on - easy! Decide which peripherals you need to be powered during a cut (PC, Monitor, Router, etc.) & which ones you just need surge protection from (printer, speakers, phone, etc.). Then plug the relevant plugs into the sockets. Because these are UK sockets, there's no need to mess around with 'kettle plug' type leads to connect to peripherals, just plug in & go. There's also Ethernet sockets for your router protection, + another one for the data cable (Ethernet one end & USB the other), this gives instant access to the current state of the battery, via the supplied software. The Software: PowerChute Personal Edition is supplied & versions for Vista, 2000/XP, 98/Me & Mac are on the same disk. This is simple to install & has many options, including: how long you want your system to run on batteries before sleep/hibernation, which alarms you want it to use when there's a power outage, & the current power state of the battery (how long it will run with your current power drain). This isn't 'all singing, all dancing' software, but it has enough options to cover most users shut-down preferences. The Hardware: As described in the Tech Specs, this unit has 4 UK sockets for UPS with power surge, & another 4 UK sockets for power surge only. Obviously, the less you have plugged into the UPS sockets, the longer the battery will run for. Surge protection sockets for your ADSL router are placed on the opposite end to the power switch. The Power button is self explanitary & the GREEN light shows when there is power & RED light shows when the battery is being charged. Also, when you just want to turn everything off which is plugged in, you can just hit the POWER button & all is shut down (handy too if you have all your TV, PVR, Bluray player, PS3, etc plugged in & you turn them all off at night). The MASTER ENABLE button allows you to power down all other peripherals when the Master socket has been powered down. So, for example, you have your PC tower plugged into the MASTER socket, when this socket has been powered down, the other UPS sockets will do the same. There is a way to set the 'threshold' of this, but I'm still trying various options to get it how I want it. Anyway, the instructions take you through this process. All-in-all, this is an excellent UPS for home/small office use. Brilliant if you have limited space for a 'tower' style UPS, as it's size is minimal. The UK type sockets are ideal for a 'plug & play' set up, the software is adequate & the features are all very handy. APC has put a lot of thought into this piece of kit, & it isn't surprising that they are the world leaders in UPS. I have added a few pictures, which may help if you're undecided which UPS to get. Really, I can't recommend the ES 700 highly enough.

I bought this UPS as a power cut that occured a few months ago destroyed my hard drive so I wanted some protection against power failure. Caution this is a very heavy unit as it contains the battery it is also quite large as it has eight 3 pin mains outlets.

Having had this unit for a few weeks now I cannot comment on it's performance on shutting down my PC during a power cut but I did test it using a small desk lamp and switched off the mains, it worked perfectly. The build is a little plasticky but it's all there the sockets have enough room around them so that you can use items that have a power supply with enough room so they don't clash with another device plugged in.

It has surge protection for the phone line and the router / modem along with the sockets themselves and comes complete with the USB cable to connect to a computer to automate shutdown thus preventing damage to the hard drive. This also has an option to power down four of the sockets once the device (computer) etc that is connected to the master socket goes into standby to save electricity which is a great little bonus.

Now the good bit the UPS comes with a CD ROM with software to shut down your computer but it has many extras allowing you to set the parameters of voltage drop and thresh hold along with how long the power is off before a shutdown command is given. The software will also tell you if the battery is good along with how long it will run under a load in my case a wireless modem router, 23" monitor and a quad core high end PC will last 35 minutes so more than enough time to save everything. The software shows in percentage how much battery power and if there has been any power cuts or brown outs over a two week period.

The unit itself has two status LED's along with an audible alarm once a power cut happens, these can be de-activated via the software. I recommend this product highly as I am in the electrical trade and have used many APC UPS units in control gear I manufacture this is an absolute bargain.

5* recommended. In the winter storms we had two short power cuts and several power dips, the UPS switched in automatically every time and kept the PC and peripherals running perfectly.

When connected to a PC with a USB lead, your Windows power management software may see the UPS as if it was a laptop battery, but it is worth installing the included `PowerChute' software which lets you configure the UPS and monitor any power problems that have happened. It will also shut the PC down after a preset time if the power is cut. I've used the software on Windows 8, 8.1 and XP and it works well. The battery power meter is optimistic as usual but there is plenty of time for a clean shutdown if the power fails. The 700VA model is good value and supports my 2013 desktop PC, monitor and printer easily.

One terminal of the battery has to be connected before use, it's not difficult and only has to be done once, but don't pull the battery out too far while you're connecting it because on my UPS the other terminal was already connected. Then give it at least 16 hours charging before first use.

The ES8 has eight UK sockets, four of these have battery backup and surge protection, one is the master socket. Four of the sockets have surge protection only, three of these can be set to power off automatically when the appliance plugged into the master socket (like your PC) is switched off or goes into standby mode.

There are sockets to protect phone or network lines against power surges, a reset button and status lights and an optional `beep' alarm to signal power cuts.

I found this UPS to be very good value for money. It works well when the power goes but i did have a few issues with it. I previously had a Belkin Universal UPS. The main difference i noted was that the software included with this APC UPS is not as good. In fact i found it so poor i would not recommend installing it. It does not show the load on the UPS and whether i have my pc running of it or nothing pluged in to it the UPS still said i had a maximum of 37 minutes when on battery. I'm not sure if this is actually the design of the UPS or just bad software. I downloaded the latest version of APC powerchute but had problems with it, when the power failed it actually caused a blue screen error in Windows (XP). When i uninstalled the software everything worked fine only i dont have any real control over the UPS, such as turning off its alarm or seeing how long it will last. Also, some people commented that it was difficult to initially connect the battery. I found it very easy and would have no complaint, just tip over the UPS so the battery slides out a bit and then push on the connecter. The battery is a standard lead-acid like a small car battery and so is safe to connect by hand.

    Pro's:
    Low weight for a UPS.
Works well with plenty of sockets.
No adapters required to plug things into it.
Quiet, only makes a slight hum when running off battery, silent otherwise.
    Replaceable battery.
Very good value for money. (I think anyway ;) )

    Cons:
Bad software. (But this looks to be the same software for all APC UPS's.)
Is not picked up as a standard battery by laptops, so you need to install software to see its battery life gauge.

Overall, i would recommend this UPS because it is very good value for money and does what is required, i.e Gives enough time to safely save your work and shutdown a pc when the power fails.
