I was very pleased to find this excellent and underrated classic series from the 80s available as a reasonably priced import.
Told very much from the Australian point of view, this was a notable WW1 drama that with reasonable historical accuracy charted the course of a fighting unit from basic training, Gallipoli and eventually the trenches of the Western Front.
Humorous, moving and with very well-realised action scenes, it was a fine production for the time and still stands up as an outstanding piece of TV drama if you missed it first time round.
“Anzacs” was only shown twice by the BBC (as far as I'm aware) then vanished - it still hasn't been re-shown on terrestrial TV since then.
This Dutch DVD import presents the series across 5 discs with optional Dutch subtitles; there is a brief “making of” on the last disc, but otherwise there are no other extras. Picture quality is very good for its age.
A very recommendable set.

A fantastic series, that whilst a little too heavy on the larrikinism, to the point of being shaking head worthy, this has to be one of the best made miniseries to grace Australian television. The actors were so well cast, believable in their acting and just well done. How could you not love Puddin' when he apologizes to his mates.

This is a must see series for anyone interested in WW1 period drama, very much in the style of Wings - Series 1-2 [DVD] [1977 ]. This 7.5 hour series was first broadcast over here in England in 1981 and has remained in my memory all this time, so good was the acting, storylines and battle scenes. Crucially, the characterisations in this series are top notch, especially as regards the Pat Cleary (played by Paul Hogan) character, with him being responsible for most of the humour in the show.
The series shows in sometimes graphic detail the experiences of the Aussies in WW1, ably demonstrating how bands of men stayed together under pressure, their loyalty to each other keeping them sane as friends die all around them. Amazingly the series does feature a couple of genuine WW1 tanks in battle scenes, as this was a time way before CGI became in vogue.
Apart from the series the DVD also contains an hour long 'making of' programme that adds to the enjoyment factor.
I really cannot recommend this enough to people who like war dramas, as it is right up there with the very best. In short, a worthy tribute to those who sacrificed themselves for us.

Superb series, a breath of fresh air. A trillion times better than the crap Pommy-bashing "Galipoli" series. This is the real deal, with morals and standards of the time, when Australia was proud to be British, and also proud to be independant. Actual Australian veterans accounts back up the feeling around this series 100%.

I did not see all of this series when it was shown in the 80's but, having read some favourable reviews and being interested in the Great War I was keen to see it having discovered that it is available on DVD.

Based on what I have read I think it is reasonably accurate historically by the standards of TV drama. The battle scenes are not as impressive as they could be if it was made now with modern CGI technology but some of the tactical problems which commanders faced and the innovations which helped to overcome those problems to an extent are addressed. An example is the scene where the characters are seen closely following a creeping artillery barrage.

Paul Hogan plays a character remarkably similar to Crocodile Dundee or perhaps just plays himself. Either way he adds a bit of humour to a grim tale.

The DVD is an import and some of the text on the box is in Dutch but the Dutch sub-titles are easily switched off. Highly recommended if you like war films.

First saw this in the early 80s when off work with a broken rib, had recorded it on VHS, waited a long time to get it on DVD, quality not bad, and plays well without the subtitles. Still watchable even by todays standards. Gives a different take on WWI with a different point of view from down under. Not too gory but still gives the horrors of war a sufficient impact. Very much a "band of brothers" feel, the troops were fighting firstly for their mates. recommend it. Although some of the politics should be taken with a pinch of salt.

I too watched this when it was first on the TV. All I could remember was Flanagan running and taking out a German machine gun post. Brilliant stuff.
Do not be put off by the fact that it is a Dutch import. The picture quality is perfect for a transfer to DVD of such an 'old' series; the sound quality is fine, and YES, you
can easily turn off the Dutch subtitles and it plays in English.
Watching the first disc i thought it was not ooing to be as good as I remembered, a bit too much humour from Paul Hogan, but by the third disc when you have got to know the characters and things are really grim for them, I was hooked and watched it every night. Not as 'serious' as 'Band of Brothers' or 'The Pacific' but still very stirring and moving. I had wet eyes at the end. It give five it a full five stars without reservation.
