This was an upgrade to a 3700x so I was used to manually adjusting the settings in power supplied to it by the motherboard. You can find out about this if you search for undervolting, this is more the motherboard makers fault than AMD's. On to this chip itself, a worthwhile upgrade to my system, installation was easy like all modern CPU's. Not had any issues running games or applications and is a very stable chip. I leave mine clocked at 4.0 GHz at that is my chips sweet spot, with a 240 mm AiO temps stay at 75 to 76 c on a full stress test and 65 ish c when gaming, with undervolt applied. The last great AM4 chips, it is a good one.

Being the last in the lineup of AM4, it absolutely put a shining gold nail on the coffin. It performs incredibly well, absolutely destroying the next generation for price to performance and being able to use it without replacing your motherboard unlike with *cough cough* Intel, has been a big money saver and absolutely worth the upgrade.

The X3D feature has given a massive boost in gaming FPS.

Would absolutely recommend for Gaming over productivity.

To begin, I had a good mid range AM4 gaming rig (4 year old) that I was debating upgrading e.g. new motherboard and system overhaul at significant cost, but after some internet research I realised that with a BIOS update my MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WIFI motherboard could be upgraded from my AMD 3700X to 5800X3D, with the benefit of a substantive boost to 1080p or 1440p gaming performance.

Please note that I had recently updated my GPU from an NVIDIA MSI RTX 2070 TRI FROZR Super to AMD Powercolor Red Devil 7800XT, and whilst I did note the performance boost on the GPU swap, it felt something was missing, as if the system could perform better (Cyber punk at 1080p averaging 97fps for example on ultra settings). That lead to the above research and decision to replace my CPU with the 5800X3D.

CPU replacement went to plan and system booted fine, but I noted increased fan noise and elevated CPU temps. By design it would seem that AMD states the 5800X3D is fine to run at 85-100 degrees C....sorry but that doesn't float with me, safe yes, but noisy and power hungry. After a little research, I discovered if you have an MSI motherboard that supports AM4 and has the relevant BIOS update then you will have a setting for Kombo Strike in the CPU overclocking settings, which will essentially undervolt your 5800X3D by 30millivolts, meaning more efficient energy use and less heat, a setting that is within manufacturers safe tolerances too.

Following the above I was very pleased with the improved thermals, after adjusting fan profiles (I just set case fans to a noise level I could accept and stuck them there, whilst letting GPU and CPU be managed by PWM curve based on temp).

On a side note, whilst going through the above, I stumbled across 2 fundamental things I had overlooked in the past:

1. TPM settings for RAM, it turns out I had never been utilising my RAM frequency as I should have (rookie mistake), when I activated TPM mode 2, I noted an additional boost to RAM frequency and FPS in certain games
2. I discovered that the above mentioned bios update also facilitated the use of SAM (Smart Access Video), which in essence allows your CPU and GPU to communicate much faster (very basic explanation) assuming your hardware supports it. In some instances this has lead to an almost 20% boost in game FPS....and it is a free setting you may already have and not realise if you have an AM4 motherboard.

Regarding the above mentioned cyberpunk, ultra setting FPS jumped to 215 fps using AMD 2.1 on Performance setting, but I would recommend Intel settings on Quality (185 fps) for eye candy.

FYI I'm, not a Cyberpunk fanboy...it was just the most reliable benchmark I had at hand to task both CPU and GPU on mixed settings.

Long story short, best of a CPU if you have a good AM4 board and want to wait and skip AM5 at present, AM6 isn't that far away :D

PS is you are a user of AMD video cards and experience frame stutter, clear the V cache (google it) or just remove adrenalin and install the base driver without adrenalin fixed my issues in Hogwarts, RD2, Cyberpunk, BG3....

Happy gaming

Do not do the X pattern with most pastes like people suggest, it's too much paste and easy to mess it up.

Great chip. Bought it as an upgrade from the 5600X, and it's made my entire system a lot snappier and smoother. Games are now free of previous stutter, rotating camera ingame feels a lot more smoother, simulation games are so much more enjoyable to play, and my FPS in Overwatch 2 has gone from an average of 280-300 to 520-540 (every detail low).

Temps are great as well, have yet to go above 75 degrees under load so have nothing to worry about when it comes to temperatures. And the value is great when you take into account that I didn't need to upgrade my motherboard. All I needed to do was flash my BIOS with the latest one-and that was it. Now have a great 1440p set up.

More than happy with my desktop now, everything runs absolute perfectly and gaming is brilliant. If you're looking to use this chip for a workstation or are going to be using a work heavy station this may not be the right chip though, so I'd research further.

Super easy upgrade! Performance boost was tremendous in game. A little lack lustre outside gaming. That was expected. Upgraded from 3800x and was totally worth the money! No more stutter in game and can run most games with no issue at higher graphics settings than before. Absolutely no bottlenecking with a 4070ti and 32 gig 3600mhz ram. It was a great buy! Performs great with ASE and ASA for those Ark fans. High frame rate @1080p. Decent frame rate @1440. I normally run 1440 with medium to high settings with no issues any kind related to graphics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best value CPU for GAMING of it's generation and well into the future.
Reviewed in the United States on 15 August 2023
Style Name: Processor OnlyVerified Purchase
I upgraded from a 5600 to a 5800x3d and later bought an aftermarket CPU cooler to run lower temps during summer and for higher gaming performance.

This upgrade was massive for me for gaming as that is my main focus and hobby on my desktop. With the AMD 5000x series drivers for my bios already installed this was plug-and-play for me.

Gaming performance hit my target 144hz on my 1440p monitor in most games with reduced settings as framerate is my go-to in fast-paced games like FPS. I do occasionally reduce framerate in single-player games or games that are isometric to reduce gpu/cpu load and get more consistent frame-times when upping graphic settings. I would recommend this in most cases for the majority of gamers but this is still my preference.

Performance is SMOOTH and I do mean buttery smooth for me. The change in the 1% lows was immediately felt by me, but take this with a grain of salt especially if you are less experienced with high framerates/stutters and not a major PC enthusiast. Most people will game at 1080p on lower refresh rates, but please try to take this CPU to at least 1440p 90-120hz for optimal experience.

COOLER - I kept my wraith cooler from my older 5600 to start while I researched what cooler I wanted to go with but I did game on this cooler for over a month. The wraith cooler was more than sufficient in most scenarios but due to the summer heat, and more demanding games my CPU temps were going above 80C and causing my room to get hotter and some CPU throttling requiring more tampering with settings and research into curve optimization. Much of my room heat comes from my PC due to it being closed, but it is an older house, a lightly insulated wooden home, with 5 windows, along with a mini-fridge and a bathroom that seems to absorb heat from somewhere. This temp was not ideal for me due to my room often being above 80F and during the heatwaves and AC work done up to 88 or higher in my room.

COOLER Pt 2 - To reduce my room heat and reduce CPU thermal throttling I purchased an aftermarket CPU cooler with 6 heat pipes. This dramatically reduced my CPU thermal throttling reducing my average temps by 10-20F which also reduced temps on my GPU. The cooler I bought was around 40-50 bucks so if you are interested that is more than enough to cool this CPU for its lifetime.

Curve Optimizer(WARNING!! this may void your warrant) - When using a curve optimizer with this CPU you will see a sizeable increase in performance and thermal temps. You can use a no-update manual optimizer like PBO2 Tuner or research into making it always optimized with bios settings. Idle temps get the most benefit from this and second is when performing at medium-high load in my experience. Idle temps were 5-10F reduced and medium-high load temps were in a similar range and sometimes far better due to increased CPU performance as well.

This CPU is an incredible value for anyone that is enthusiastic about gaming performance. Be aware that there is a newer generation of x3D cpus but the current dollar-to-dollar value for 7000x3d cpus is not close enough to consider for anyone that does not want a maxed-out expensive system.

On sale, the 5800x3d CPU is an absolute NO-BRAINER for gaming, but please be aware you need to buy a cooler, and you may need a bios update PRIOR to installing your CPU if you do not already have an AMD 5000 series CPU. If the 7000x3d series goes on sale and you are building an entirely new system, you should be aware of RAM costs and Motherboard costs as well as this can be a dramatic price differential for cheaper system builds if you are not careful.
