The vendor could have done a better job of cleaning the old heatpaste off it though before sale, considering the price! AM3 cpu`s are a bit thin on the ground these days, and bought this to extend the life (hopefully) of my old rig to replace my old Phenom II, which had a couple of faulty cores.
It slotted and locked in first time of trying, applying Artic Silver heat paste and re-fitting my Zalman heat-pipe fan cooler, found it idles at around 38-42 degrees. This Phenom II 3.4 Ghz (on my Asus MB) will idle at around 800-1150 Ghz when not doing much, so seems to keep the temps down.
Obviously, it will run a bit hotter using games, photo-editing, etc. Although its an old cpu, it can still hold its own against some newer ones, for everyday use.
For anyone wondering, the CPU speed scales on demand in 3 steps: x4 @ 800MHz, x11 @ 2.2GHz and x17 @ 3.4GHz. Obviously, if you overclock or manually set the clock speed, then it will run at a constant speed. Runs nice and cool with a copper Zalman heatsink/fan. I never use the stock heatsinks and fans, so I can't comment on the one that comes with this. From experience, they are OK for simple desktop PCs, but become noisy under load, and run hotter.
Power use is better at 125W max compared to my old 9950 at 140W max. Consumption at lower frequencies is far better as a result of the improved design.
A worthwhile upgrade, that's saved me the cost of a new PC or the unnecessary power use and heat of an overclocked 9950.
SSD drive for the OS next! Maybe a GFX card upgrade when my GTX280 becomes too slow.
This may not be the choice of serious gamers but for everyday number and graphics crunching the Phenom II's can't be beaten. They take everything you can throw at them, can be overclocked if you so desire, and have a really secure mounting system when compared to the competition. In fact, if needed, I can even retro fit my six core on the same board using the same socket - although I've never had an AMD CPU die on me!
At the current price, a real bargain I feel.
My main use is playing Skyrim (ultra settings), which runs smoothly with an HD6950 graphics card, 4GB DDR3 memory.
Incidentally, I have tried the above set up with an FX-4300 at 4.1 GHz. The Phenom II X4 965 does a better job, with much less stuttering.
EDIT: It's now November 2016 and the CPU world has moved on. However, I'm pleased to report that this can still hack it. In conjunction with an R9 290 4GB and 8GB RAM, this can run Fallout 4 at 1440p on Ultra smoothly. Dips below 30 fps only when entering Diamond City. Not bad for a 6+ year old CPU.
DID ANYONE SAY THAT THE STOCK CPU COOLER IS LOUD? Sorry, have to shout above the din that's coming from what used to be a quiet pc. Now looking to replace the stock cooler with something a little more discrete. This is the -1 brownie point but I knew about that before I bought it but I'm still quite surprised how noisy it is as it looked ok.
Anyway, I can now stream films without jitter - I just can't hear them!
East to fit, It took less than 5 min to upgrade
included Heatsink and fan adequate for cooling at default 3.4Ghz, not a lot of noise,
I can still record acoustic guitar in same room and not notice it
My old projects now have dropped to less than half cpu load after previously being maxed out on a Athlon x2 5.2Ghz
If I get around to overclocking sometime there's more power there if I need it. new heatsink of course should make running it at 4Ghz quite an easy task
Originally I was after a x6 but decided to stick with present motherboard and use the best it could handle, well this is it. I need not have worried, it rocks
thanks to andrew above for a good review
My PC is now a multi tasking, video editing, gaming beast all built around this PHENOMinal cpu, fantastic for it's price.
