I realized that I have not written a review for this AMD CPU yet after 4 years of using it, so this is how it has been for me over that period of time. This was an upgrade from the AMD FX4300 which was a good little CPU but struggled with Assassin's Creed Syndicate and so I needed something more powerful and the FX 8350 was the one I picked.
The FX 8350 is a great all-rounder and can handle a lot of tasks you throw at it including gaming, video and audio editing, obvious basic tasks like word processor and browsing. However, as time has passed and games have improved, I have found that it has struggled with newer games like Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and has prompted me to upgrade again to an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. Watch Dogs Legion will freeze for a few seconds for about the first 5 minutes of playing, and then it will just run between 20 FPS - 40FPS. Assassin's Creed Valhalla initially did run on my PC, but as time has gone by and Ubisoft has released more updates, it is now completely unplayable.
The AMD FX 8350 is now 9-years-old, and it is surprising how good it has remained over that time period and remains available for purchase. In terms of popularity, I would say this CPU is on par with the popularity of the AMD Ryzen 5 3600, which appears to be the go-to all-rounder. Both having the benefit of being budget friendly with fantastic performace.
Now for the elephant in the room, the cooler. It can be very loud when gaming and as others have stated, it is like having your own jet fighter inside your PC. So I would recommend getting a better cooler. I however, I used the stock cooler for 4 years, and for much of that time I got so used to the noise I stopped hearing it unless I consciously thought about it.
The FX 8350 can play many games, but the most recent will struggle. For me, GTA V is very playable and the CPU with my Gigabyte Nvidia 1050Ti 4GB Winforce OC, can hit between 30 FPS - 60 FPS and it will mostly hover around the 40s. Call of Duty WWII will remain a solid 60 FPS. Later Assassin's Creed titles like Origin and Odyssey are very playable but a drop in framerate is noticable as it struggles a little but can run into the 40s. It can easily play Battlefield 4, 1, Hardline, and 5 as these games aren't overly demanding. It will have no trouble with popular titles like Fortnite and PUBG but I don't think it could run Call of Duty Warzone.
Overall, I think this CPU is still good in 2021 if you play games that came out in 2017 or older, and it will be able to do any other task you need. Video rendering may take longer than modern CPUs, but it will also depend on your RAM and mostly your GPU. Word processing, browsing, YouTube are easily done and the CPU will not break a sweat with any of these tasks. The stock cooler is loud, but it will keep your CPU consistently cool and reduces any chances of throttling. If you want to play the latest games, then I suggest looking at AMD Ryzen and specifically the Ryzen 5 3600 if you want an all-rounder.
Update: I'm now on the 2700x 32gb ram and 1080ti extreme and have never been so amazed by the performance. Added an ssd samsung evo and start up is almost instant. Sorry 8350 but it's time you retired old friend
Not wanting to fork out for the full AM4 upgrade I decided to go for this 8350 to limp my system on another year or so and it is great, given my machine a new lease of life and yeah now on full med setting in apex legends at its worst it drops to 50FPS but 90% of the time its locked to 60@1080p which is fine by me.
Well worth the money
