I bought this incredibly cheap processor after I ran into serious video driver issues on Linux with my actual processor, the brand new AMD A10- 7850K which I bought only a week after its release.

Both the open source ATI driver and the AMD Catalyst beta drivers (the stable version has not yet got support for Kaveri processors) did not work properly with my dual screen setup and I desperately needed a working PC for an CD artwork project I was working on. Having already spent £126 on the AMD A10- 7850K, £53 on a motherboard, £77 on a case, £128 on a monitor and £69 on RAM, I was pretty upset that I still did not have a working PC (my old one had died a few days earlier). With my budget spent, and pressure to finish the CD artwork mounting, I decided to go for the cheapest compatible processor I could get my hands on so that I could at least carry on with my work, while waiting for AMD to get their act together and release stable Linux video drivers.

I really do think this APU is worth 5 stars. It's fantastic.

I decided to use this APU in a budget HTPC build to support 1080p playback. It does the job excellent and I can't give it enough praise. It's actually faster than I expected, It does slow down when it has multiple programs open at once but were talking 3-4 and even then it's only very slight - just keep the expectations realistic.

This is not a gaming CPU / Rendering machine or huge number crunching. But for office / HTPC / file server or web server it just cant be faulted at all. The on chip graphics can even handle some new game titles at 720p and emulators.

5/5 for me.

Works a treat in our home theatre PC. Has enough GPU horsepower to avoid the need for a separate graphics card for use as a home theatre PC which is mainly used for showing TV and films and occasional casual gaming.

However, the more powerful A4-5300 has been cheaper for a while now, so it makes little sense to buy the 4000 model while that is the case. In use it might use a bit less power (both models are rated at 65W TDP, but in normal use you could expect a lower CPU/GPU clock to equate to lower power use in processors from the same range). The difference would be so marginal though, it just wouldn't make sense to spend more on a slower APU.

That said, purely reviewing this APU for what it is - excellent product. I've been using the A4 range in PC builds for a while and they are fantastic value. If you just want an office/general use PC and you want an overall spend of under £300, these APUs can't be beaten. They handle HD video easily too.

They will struggle with modern games on their own - so if you are considering this for a budget gaming PC, you would be wise to choose a CPU (Athlon) and a separate budget graphics card instead, as you can get better performance for your money. You could in theory get a matching AMD Radeon graphics card to work with this A4-4000 in Crossfire mode, but you would have to spend extra money on faster RAM otherwise the APU would hold up the graphics card. The cost of doing that would go beyond the cost of buying an Athlon CPU and a better graphics card.

Bought this APU to update the bios on a motherboard so it supported the AMD 860k.This worked right out of the box as expected and is now in my friends media PC, he uses this chip for playing videos and music on his home TV and it works well for that. Excellent value for money, if you are a general user then this would be a suitable chip for you.
