This tablet was purchased as a gift for my wife to take away with her on business. We have a Motorola Xoom as our household tablet, but this was too large to carry in a handbag. This 7" tablet is about the size of a kindle, lower in price - but has 10 x the functionallity (including using it as a Kindle with the Kindle app if you choose to do so!!). She can now leave behind her laptop and kindle when travelling and is very relieved to have the weight off her shoulders!
We're very satisfied with the tablet for the price bracket.
I'll limit my review to the details that cannot be gleamed from the product description and which may concern potential buyers considering buying a budget tablet over a premium product.
Performance: With the double memory and dual core chip, there is absolutely no lag or delay with the tablet. We've ran HD video through to the TV and there are no skips, stutters or hang-ups.
Screen Responsiveness: The screen is very responsive and was my greatest concern in buying a 'budget' tablet - very pleased that the screen is more than sensitive enough to cope with the lightest of swipes and pinches.
Screen Readibility/Resolution: This unit has a slightly higher resolution screen from most of the budget units and was the main deciding factor in buying this as opposed to another. The screen quality is good. At 1024x600 it is a little bit pixelated compared to higher end products if you look really closely at it - but it is more than readable and has good contrast. I haven't tested the screen in bright sunlight (I live in the UK and we haven't had any sun all year!) - but I think it would be 'just' legible.Read more ›
The hardware performance is great. Very little lag or stutter to be seen anywhere, even in 3D games. Video runs very smoothly too.
The build quality is excellent. It doesn't feel cheap in any respect, to my surprise. I received the all-black model, which I prefer the look of to the black & white one seen in most of the pictures.
The screen is of a better resolution than most 7 inch tabs, and is crystal clear even on the lowest brightness setting (which I tend to use to preserve battery). It also came with 1 free screen protector (already applied).
If I have to find faults, the battery life is less than advertised (but I have never yet in my life bought a phone or laptop which didn't make excessive claims about battery life). It drains fastest when playing games (when it also gets quite hot), 2 to 3 hours, for just browsing/reading it will last about 5. Also not particularly fast to charge. The speaker is puny, as I expected, but obviously sound is perfect through earphones (which for some reason I received two pairs of).
With these specification at this price (£96 when I got it), I can't let those niggles stop me from awarding 5 stars.
Exactly what I was going to get was not entirely clear from the order so I will list out what I got.
A white backed 8Gb tablet.
A mains charger (not the slow USB one) so it charges pretty quickly.
An OTG USB cable (USB to mini USB)
2 pairs of headphones (one white pair which are branded Ainol, and are copies of Apple's standard phones, and sound equally average and an extra in-ear pair as the per the picture and marked Draco Tec and sound poor). As the white ones sound as good/bad as Apple's offering, I can't complain about the extra pair at all.
A brief English manual to get you going.
A thin protective film over, which will do until I get a proper protective cover, this one is slightly "sticky" if you have sweaty fingers.
I had a quick play with the initial firmware, and all seemed fine.
This is one quick and responsive tablet. My wife has an iPad 2, so I can compare.
However, I flashed the firmware almost straight away to Dark Elf 2, as I'd read good things about it (very very easy to do).
Now the review.
The tablet is fairly heavy (in a good way) and well made, although the case to creak ever so slightly if you put some pressure on it.
I left it charging for 6-7 hours with only a bit of playing to start with.
I've pretty much had the tablet on the lowest power setting since I got it, and not had any issues at all, only the N64 emulator stuttered very slightly in Mario Kart and Super Mario 64, but not as to make any difference. It even seems perfectly fine set to low on Shadowgun, which is known for testing hardware.Read more ›
Packaging is a joy to behold and opening this tablet up just ten days after ordering certainly rivalled anything the guys at Cupertino can provide. Out of the box the tablet powers up as quickly as our Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 and the screen looks really good.
A quick change of language and input and we were off and running. We removed the Chinese apps from the home screen and signed into my Google account. The tablet downloaded most of my apps from my phone with a few exceptions, key amongst these was Netflix which is not compatible with the firmware update straight out of the box. There are fixes available on line but you can check those out for yourself.
Angry Birds Rio is pre-installed and runs well. I loaded up a few more games and the tablet handles then well with no lag or stutter and they look fantastic on this little screen. Ours came with a screen protector already in place. With Netflix not compatible we opened the browser and went straight to RTEPlayer, a TV catch up service, only to find that it runs perfectly and we were able to watch programmes with no issues. The speakers are fine but like so many tablets they are on the back which
There is no manual but that is hardly a problem with so much support online. There were headphones in the box and we also got a USB cable and a proper plug in charger with adapter which wasn't mentioned in the description but makes things so much easier than charging through a USB. I have been using it on and off for two days and have not charged it yet.Read more ›
