I have only recently discovered Darrell Maloney's work and I am loving it! I loved his Final Dawn series and I love this series just as much. There are some similarities, (but then again there would be), in both series - but this doesn't detract from a great end of the world story

This is just as good as book 1. Scott and his family are lovely people, and I like reading about their farming, harvesting etc. So far thy've avoided violence and unpleasantness, but I'm worried about book 3...

A little predictable. Things just don't work out right ALL the time...but in this book they do. Too convenient but enjoyed it all the same.

Enjoyed this book but it seemed too short. Can't wait to read the next book which should have just been freleased. Very enjoyable read

HASH(0x98fd2390) out of 5 stars good story 22 Mar. 2014
By readerlee5 - Published on Amazon.com

Fine characters and believable for the most part. Some possible spoiler comments-- There are only minor editing errors but there is not much action. The relative peace, still functioning hospitals, and lack of criminal or violent gangs or groups theorized for San Antonio months into the post emp world seems unlikey to me but it is a different take on things compared with most other books like this one. It also seem unlikely that Scott and his group would not have abundant antibiotics already on hand given their preparations as outlined in the earier book (also there are better antiotics than amoxicillian . . . why is this one aside from penicillian the key for helping stop the relatively undefined plague?). I did like the book very much and four stars is a pretty high rating compared with others I have given . . . and it is a real independent rating unlke some of those we read on amazon.

The book is well written, the storyline is great, and the characters are your friend, your next door neighbor, and the children next door. I am really enjoying this saga. It is an excellent and a must read. Any idea when the third book will be out.

HASH(0x99829b88) out of 5 stars Finally a naturally occuring apocalypse... 6 April 2014

The linkage to the Mayan calendar and subsequent results are a fine frame to hang this story on, but the main character seems just a bit too clever and nothing much affects him and his companions as the world unravels. Don't get the wrong impression, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, just felt it skirted some of the probable realities of the situation as presented.

HASH(0x9980b4c8) out of 5 stars Ok but not great 2 Aug. 2014

This had a little too much detailed information about how to do farming. The Faraday cage included as a giant garage was a little far-fetched, although, according to some, this type of cage will indeed keep electronics from frying out. It's not the cage I am disparaging, it is the size of it built as a two garage.

Everyone gets along, even two ex wives of one husband. There is a neighbor who just happens to know how to farm wheat and he has all the tools to do it. This person knows how to change every battery and motor and where to get all the parts.

There are few if any evil bands of marauders because they are not able to get as far as this hidden location.

The group has everything they need, including two Walmart trucks full of everything ... Like I said, a little too farfetched. I found myself skimming through pages when there was too much detail.

By the way, again, this is one of those books that does not have an ending. You have to get the next book to know what will happen. I do not like that and probably will not get the continued story. I will say this; if the world did lose all power etcetera, this is the place I would want to be ... fairy land ... where anything is possible...

HASH(0x9934ca5c) out of 5 stars ~~Preppping advice + More~~ 1 Sept. 2014
By Off Grid..and Loving it! - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This is a continuation of the series and a quick read. The characters get along nicely considering there is an ex-wife in the house. I like to think this is something that could occur in real life. Also, a young girl has been "absorbed" into this family as she had been left adrift.

Once again, I appreciate the knowledge of prepping that is given throughout this book. And, with the addition of Duchess for Duke, this turns into a win situation for man's best friend. Now, if only Duke is able to keep alert for his guard duty!

Highly recommended...
