In 1902, East of Lake Nyassa (Malawi), a lion had entered a hut and killed a woman and her child. The hut was burnt down by the askaris (guards), after shooting into he hut, killing all. Following man-eater lions was dangerous but many a times they vanished and never returned to the human carcass, even when Gerard sat waiting for them.
A leopard was disturbing the hens, when Gerard shot at him, the leopard charged and had to be shot. At the upper Shire River in Nyassaland (Malawi), Gerard had to shoot few crocodiles as they got hold of an African woman. He cleaned her wounds and she got better, but was killed by another crocodile 6 months later on the same spot. Trying to keep warm on one rainy day, Gerard felt something slimy between his legs and his blanket. His servants pulled him quickly out of this blanket revealing a puff adder, which was killed with sticks.
