This book was first published in 1920s (2011), has 86 pages, 15 chapters, 9 B/W drawings but no maps. The book deals with not only man-eater lions, but with leopard, crocodiles and snakes. Hunting through Africa, Gerard as asked for help in dealing with Man-eater lions who were busy with Africans. This time, a woman had been killed and dragged into the grass. Passing her half eaten body, Gerard heard a growl and he shot at the lion, who first escaped, but then charged him. The lion was shot 2--3 times, killing him. He was an old mangy lion.
In 1902, East of Lake Nyassa (Malawi), a lion had entered a hut and killed a woman and her child. The hut was burnt down by the askaris (guards), after shooting into he hut, killing all. Following man-eater lions was dangerous but many a times they vanished and never returned to the human carcass, even when Gerard sat waiting for them.
A leopard was disturbing the hens, when Gerard shot at him, the leopard charged and had to be shot. At the upper Shire River in Nyassaland (Malawi), Gerard had to shoot few crocodiles as they got hold of an African woman. He cleaned her wounds and she got better, but was killed by another crocodile 6 months later on the same spot. Trying to keep warm on one rainy day, Gerard felt something slimy between his legs and his blanket. His servants pulled him quickly out of this blanket revealing a puff adder, which was killed with sticks.
More lion stories are narrated from Windoek, South West Africa (Namibia), Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Zambezi Area, South Africa, Kalahari, lion that charged and bit Gerard's shoulder, desert lions of 1845, lions and Arabs, lion in Algeria, the Red lion and Arabian mountain lions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lion Hunting in Algeria 30 Jan. 2014

This book contains authentic lion hunting stories from a bygone age. It was really interesting to know that in the 1800's
there were a lot of man eating lions in Algeria. I would never have imagined it! I always thought that was desert country.

The first section was interesting and a decent read. Once it got into the middle eastern type stories became unrealistic and not my cup of tea.

Extremely well written by a true renaissance man of a time sadly gone by. A master of understatement in relating hair-raising situations.

This is a very interesting and readable book for Kindle. I really enjoy reading about the old days of hunting in Africa, and this book fits the bill very nicely.
