Right a funny cleaner compared to the Dyson cylinder one I have used, as this one stands up when not using it. Can also fit into a kitchen cupboard if hose (well bit before hose) taken off it for storing, bit of a fiddle I think though so will store it in laundry room so ready to use anytime. Then the next dilemma, which way to store upright with tool attached to side or flat like Dyson cylinder either way you still get the hose problem, as this one you can not seem to just wrap round it easily.
A good sized handle for easy if carrying it upstairs etc. It looks a modern jazzy cleaner but does it clean as well as the Dyson or Vax of Henry that we have? To me with having a dog and livestock we always tend to have dried mud, bits etc along with dog hairs about the house. Also a dog that scratches carpets so need a cleaner that gets up even those tiny bits under skirting boards. Also to get rid of the nail marks that he makes more like Freddie Krugger has visited if not. Can say it has, also annoying spider webs that seem to stick to the carpet have come away quickly.
In actual fact I much prefer this to the Dyson cylinder I have as it seems to pick up more as well as being lighter for carrying about the house to upstairs. Fits nicely on stairs whilst doing them and the cord is a nice long length so no extension required. As far as this one goes I do like it for a cylinder.
Cord rewind function, which when used first two times did not go in, had to undo for it to then go in. Hence just a four star if not would have been a five. The instructions are basic but clearly show the various parts etc. So easy to put together.
Number 1-5 shows on the display clearly for amount of suction, power strength. Now even on highest setting the noise was about the same as a Dyson and dog still runs away. The highest setting and my god the carpet was nearly up and rugs got sucked into it quicker than anything I have known before. If the dog gets near this he could be hairless and fast.
The thing I found though using it on carpets was that quite a lot of power needed to push and pull it using it so almost like a body work out for me which when suffering back ache not a good idea to use. Good enough reason for other members of the family to use it instead.
The tools seem well made (brown hairs along with black and they seem more bristly than some others). But time will tell, this will get used most days though so will get put through its paces pretty quickly. Have used just the nozzle to put some vacuum clothing bags away and it did an excellent job on those.
What I like about it is that it seems able to do all floors, we have a mixture of carpet, Lino and wooden flooring along with slate tiles so always look out for a cleaner that does all mixtures. Just a simple foot press and can do tiled floor then mats in kitchen making life a lot easier, then stairs after without changing heads etc. That's the other thing you get the heads with it, but no carpet beating turbo brush like with the Dyson, not sure if you can buy one or not. But to me this ones does not seem to warrant having one.
Also looking forward to the full machine to see how it compacts the dirt as it sounds a really clever idea, another thing is that this one does not tend to blow ash everywhere when working. No side vent as if you have an open fire and have ash side vents blow it everywhere which is not good if just hoovered it all.
So all in all pleased with it but needs more work using it, like seeing how it is to clean cars etc then will update the review again.
Now I like this but if honest prefer an upright cleaner for my own personal reasons having back issues and suffering with fibro and find an upright easier to push than pull like you do with a cylinder. But even this one is a massive improvement on the one we had. OH however prefers the cylinder type so is more than happy with this.
On first use I managed to get the floor attachment jammed on to the extension rod. I don’t know what I did but it took a very great deal of effort to release it (both feet on the floor attachment pulling the extension with ALL my strength. It has not happened since. The extension tube is really well made and is easy to adjust.
I found the on / off and cable rewind buttons don’t respond well to foot presses (seems to tilt the switch), so needs to be pushed by hand; as shown in the instruction booklet. I really like the fact the cable is very flexible and mostly retracts very easily into the cable winder. If the power is switched off at the mains the next time it is switched on it starts at zero power until one presses the start button.
The AeroPro silent and Parketto nozzles permit very powerful suction on flat surfaces (the Parketto will actually stick to a vertical wall), however I find they are not good at removing cat hair (Persian / Tortoiseshell), merely rolling in into fury lengths that need to be picked up and dropped into the cleaning head. Step forward the turbo nozzle; it is excellent; it spins very quickly and really does remove pet hair. The air-powered rotating beater pulls the head forwards smoothly but it does judder somewhat when pulled back towards the user. The turbo brush is only half width and whilst it is very effective it does take twice as long to cover the same area of carpet when compared to the standard (non-rotating) head. My Cat & Dog has a full width turbo brush but it’s not so powerful.
The three-in-one tool is quite a clever piece of design; it looks like a small brush attachment, but the shaft doubles as a crevice tool and opens to provide a small flat head. There’s a handy clip provided so it can live on-board the cleaner.
As mentioned earlier, on-board storage of tools is limited so a space is required for those in the cupboard or wherever. The flexible hose is quite a large diameter (45 mm) and is not quite as flexible as I would like; it does have a tendency to kink badly if one does not keep an eye out in tight spaces. No damage has been caused but it will kink so much that the suction stops.
With further reference to the hose it is rather difficult to arrange tidily, preferring to spring to its own comfortable shape which results in more space being taken up when in storage.
The capacity of the dust cylinder easily copes with a four-bedroomed ½ carpeted house. The compacter feature works well but empting the container is still an unpleasant dusty affair … there’s no solid disk because for the most part the debris is small dry particles of dust and grit with a mix of hair and fluff.
I have found that the fluff and hair elements get caught around the nose cone (can be seen in the product’s 4th picture) rather than getting to the compacting cylinder and this has to be removed by hand. The machine has two filters that need washing every six months and replacing after two years and can be found here and here.
I take an interest in the energy ratings labels on appliances, and in the UK from September 2014, all vacuum cleaners must display an energy label including:
Energy efficiency class: this machine is rated at A, although a lower Wattage (800W in this case) motor will help the machine obtain an A rating. There are also five other ratings that helps one compare performance:
Average annual energy consumption: (This calculation is based on an average household with 87 sq m who vacuum about once a week). Another 800W cleaner I have reviewed is rated at 25.9 kW hours per annum. This machine is rated at 27.3, so it's a little (just a little) more expensive to run.
Dust re-emission class: This tells you how clean the exhaust air is; clean exhaust air is important for people with allergies. Happily this machine is rated at A (the highest rating); the comparable machine was also awarded A (there are some rated at G!).
Sound power level: The sound level is given in decibels. If the level is below 70dB, you'll still be able to hear music, your phone or a baby crying. The average vacuum cleaner is 78dB. This cleaner pops in at … 78dB; the other one also at 78. Both are fairly quiet in my opinion, although when one is using the turbo brush there is a considerable noise increase.
Carpet cleaning performance class: This measures the dust pick-up on a standard test carpet. The vacuums that pick up the most dust will be rated A. Higher dust pick-up reduces allergies and will suck up dirt which is deep down in the carpet. For a clean and hygienic carpet one should choose a C rating (or above). The UltraCaptic is rated at C and that's not bad for a lower Wattage motor, however there is this from the same manufacturer that gets a grade A for this criteria.
Hard floor cleaning performance class: This measures dust pick-up (from a crevice) and scores the amount of dust that is removed. For a clean and hygienic floor one is advised to choose C or above. The UltraCaptic was rated at A and that's excellent for a lower Wattage motor.
It’s supplied with a five-year guarantee which must be activated by calling, online or by filling in the paper section. I’d advise online, because based on my previous experience of telephone calls with AEG one is left listening to music for rather a long time at 5p per minute and sometimes cut off after 20 minutes on hold! Whatever method used do remember to have the serial number to hand … it can be found on the underside of the cleaner in suitably large letters (well done AEG).
So overall it is (for me) a surprisingly powerful machine that gets excellent results on pet hairs ... much better than the Cat & Dog but the ½ width turbo brush really does increase the time spent vacuuming. I find the bossy flexible hose a little annoying but the let-down for me is that the compaction feature does not prevent dusty disposal and that other debris gets caught in the cone area on top of the vacuum requiring cleaning by hand.
