The vac I have been using is a Miele Compact Allergy Ecoline, also marketed as quiet, and at £189, cheaper than the AEG. The AEG is also a tad heavier and larger. I really like the cherry red colour.
I didn’t find the instructions the easiest but in spite of that had it assembled and working in about 20 minutes. My first reaction was a sinking feeling, as exactly like the Miele, it is incredibly hard work to push the brush along, yes, even with the “brush” retracted – this gives you back ache unless you have it on the lowest setting and in some cases for example on rugs, you have to only drag one way or the carpet would either lift up or in the case of my lounge carpet, eventually form a wave. I can’t recall vacs being this hard work in the past.
The controls are pretty self-explanatory and similar to other vacs, as for volume levels, sorry, but it seemed normal vac level to me, possibly because the Miele is a similar volume.
If I had to choose one model, it would be this one, because although it looks far less sturdy than the Miele, and in fact looks almost “plasticy,” to the point I wonder about its longevity, it has the massive bonus so far as I’m concerned, that the head end is fixed and doesn’t flop about, which drove me nuts when using the Miele. The head also flicks easily between brush “up” and brush “down” which is great, so many of them are very difficult to toggle.
The cord is the longest I’ve seen on a vac.
I’m disappointed that the bags are not available to buy as a related item on Amazon, which would be a really handy service.
I’m still searching for my perfect vacuum cleaner.
It's lightweight and easy to move around and comes with a good length of flex that means you don't have to keep changing sockets every 10 to 15 feet and it has a good length of hose too. It's very quiet for a vacuum cleaner, certainly a lot quieter than our Vax uprights, although the noise level does rise if you increase the suction power. It's very easy to open and change or empty the bag and the automatic flex rewind works well. It works well on stairs where you can stand it upright behind you as you work. Plus it looks very smart.
Now the bad points:
On all but the two lowest suction levels it's practically immovable, especially on carpet but even on vinyl flooring too. We have a thinnish runner in the hall and that was all but impossible to vacuum even on the lowest setting and on the highest three settings the fitted carpets were also impossible to clean. Despite the generally high standard build quality the plastic joint that marries the hose to the tube feels very flimsy and noticeably bends when you're struggling to push it backwards and forwards. On the higher settings it's certainly got the suction power but too much and it makes hoovering a real chore, on the lowest two settings it's much more usable, but it's also less efficient too and becomes just another "so what?" vacuum cleaner, albeit well made and expensive. I'd give it three out of five stars because it might be good on wooden, laminate or stone floors, I don't know, but it's definitely not very impressive on the carpets, rugs and vinyl flooring we've tried it on..Add to that the fact that you have to buy bags for it, which aren't cheap, and I really can't see this getting much use in our house unless the Vax breaks down and we need a temporary replacement.
It needed the instruction guide to put it together without too many bits left over - but using these assembly did only take a few minutes.
We liked the high energy efficiency rating (A); the very long cord (12 metres) so we didn't keep having to change plug sockets; the washable filter; the compact body that was relatively easy to carry upstairs; the adjustable power setting (lower settings still quite powerful but MUCH quieter).
We we less sure about ease of pushing the carpet brush back and forward - the suction was so powerful, you had to pull the brush back, then lift, then pull back again on carpets, even on the lower settings, which could make this a bit tiring to use.
It requires specialist changeable bags (not washable or easily emptyable or you will need to buy replacements) and some of the internal clickable parts seem a little flimsy (so one wonders how long they would last in heavy duty use).
The vacuum claims it is for "All Floors" but from my perspective it is much, much better on hard floors than on carpets. The machine has variable levels of suction controlled by a dial on the top of the motor casing. The suction is so strong that on the carpet setting you can see the carpet lifting off the floor - this only stopped when I turned the dial down to the upholstery setting. It was hard work even then to move the vacuuming head and all but impossible on a higher setting - you are pulling the head back and almost invariably have to lift it and place it back on the carpet, there is no glide over the carpet. Five minutes of vacuuming a short pile carpet left my upper arms in agony. Perhaps this is the way new vacuums are going. My trusty old Henry is getting on for fifteen years old and maybe a new one would be different, but it manages to glide over carpets without too much effort on the part of the operator and yet it seems to clean as well as newer models.
If you mainly have tiled/wooden floors then this machine is fine, but if you mainly have close-fitted carpets then I would look elsewhere.
