Product description

Review

"Written for the adult reader but still appropriate for a younger audience...

Kudos...for his talent at depicting another world with a prosaic quality that gives the book a level of literary panache. ....

...his intelligence emanates from every carefully selected word.

...a fine balance in storytelling, and a clear glimpse of a master at work."

-Nick Rossi, of Readingotherpeople.com and Goodreads.com

I am a professional research cosmologist. As you'd probably guess, I like my science fiction 'hard', but won't suffer a plot that drags and is too laden with science exposition. 'Adam' strikes the perfect balance. In fact it has a cinematic air with vivid and exciting action that really makes the pages fly by.

The science was all entirely plausible, with a particularly thought-provoking exploration of the ultimate consequences of rivalling artificial intelligence and human technological upgrades. The characterisations are almost all vivid to the point where I felt unusually engaged in their fate.

Every so often you come across a little known book where it seems a crime that it should be unknown and this gem is one of those books. I urge anyone to happens across this book to buy it. My motivations are entirely selfish - you need to get buying so we can see a follow up and I want to see what happens next!

Absolutely loved this book! A K Stone creates such a coherent world with detailed precision. This really feels like our world just a little in the future. It's beautifully and cleverly structured with a narrative that reveals our place within a much larger galactic context and pecking order through the thoughts and eyes of an orphan outsider. The ultimate underdog story this offers more that the usual Western-centric sci-fi perspective, the author imparts their creative powers and knowledge deftly and elegantly weaving in world history & religion, science & astronomy, A K Stones foresees environmental changes, beyond catastrophes and technological advances that all feel possible, probable & plausible plus it's jam packed with action, Faster Than Light Travel (F.T.L.T) gargantuan space ships and cities and an enemy that will make humans, aliens and AIs quake!! Read this! This needs to be on the screen!! Christopher Nolan..Ridley Scott..J J Abrams get your mince pies on this..

Gripping from the start, held sufficient suspense to keep your attention whilst also giving crumbs of background throughout so as to understand the history of the characters. Looking forward to a sequel....

I've read many of the classic sci-fi novels, from the easy to read books like Philip K Dick to the more involved ones from Kim Stanley Robinson. I found Adam an entertaining and engaging book to read. The story can be enjoyed by adults and younger readers easily, but I would caution against giving it to children, it is a little complex for very young readers. The style of writing is fresh and keeps the mind engaged. In my opinion, the best books are the ones that make you remember the scenes that the reader visualised in their minds eye. For me I can remember chapter by chapter what happened. The pace of the book is just right....some of the philosophical chapters slower and more contemplative, where-as the chapters with more action keep you turning the pages waiting for the next thrill.
I would highly recommend this novel.
Let's hope there is more to come from this author.

Very enjoyable, a real page turner that mercifully doesn't have annoying plot holes. And the science is science and engineering not convenient magic.

I really enjoyed this book, a lot of high-end world building & some very well thought out concepts. The only reason this is a 4 rather than a 5 star review is the youth of the main protagonists. I do prefer reading about more mature characters. That is not the authors fault however, but mine. I would definitely check out other books by this author as it ws mostly well written & flowed along.

Loved it! Characters I want to know more about. Will be interesting to see more nuanced character development as Adam and the others mature. Naturally many parallels to our own society and politics, intrigued to see how their society cope with the upcoming challenges and power structures. Do they have a vision of a better world? Can they break the cycle or is it inevitable? Looking forward to the next instalment!

If this really is a first novel and if A.K.Stone isn't a pseudonym for an already acknowleged master of the sci-fi genre, then I have to say that I am amazed.

The quality of the plotting and writing is superb. This is a book filled with complex imagery and concepts, which in the hands of a less skilled writer could have been an incomprehensible mess. However, Stone manages to convey all of his exraordinary vision in a way which is entirely lucid and compelling.

The only mystery for me is why there has been no follow-up. With talent like this, I would have expected (and hoped for) more.
