I`ve played all the Spider-man video games and I must admit that The Amazing Spider-man is probably one of the best video games dedicated to the famous wall crawler.
In first place it`s Amazingly entertaining thanks to its various nature of gameplay. You will fight (there are several spectacular moves and combat actions), you will climb walls, you will swing through NY city, you will visit Peter`s home and so on. There are very few boring moments (maybe it`s a little bit boring to save people all around the city as they are slightly repetitive missions) and story presents several thrilling moments.
The Spider-man world is highly detailed and accurated. If you`re a spider-man fan, you`ll have a very good reason for getting every single game collectible item in order to unlock very juicy extra contents.
The Amazing Spider-man is a great surprise in the world of tie-ins.
The controls do take some getting used to, especially since you can crawl on walls, ceilings, pillars, rafters, etc etc and sometimes figuring out which direction on the D stick makes you go forward is a bit tricky. However, this shouldn't take more than 3 missions or so. Overall the controls are smooth and fun.
The feature "Web Rush Mode" is also interesting. It allows you to slow down time for a brief while, during which you can choose a destination to speedily swing to, or an enemy to web-smash and beat up. It really gives you the feeling of agility and speed and reflexes you'd expect if you were Spider-Man.
Combat and the leveling system takes a LOT of hints from Batman: Arkham City. Similar upgrading system, combos, takedowns, etc etc. This, of course, is by no means a bad thing. Combat in Batman: AC was amazing, and I always did think it'd work well in a Spidy game as well. Combat involves a lot of bouncing around that you can acheive just by hitting the square button for normal attacks, and the triangle attacks for dodging and countering. You can also trigger "signature moves" during combat (once your combo meter gets to a certain number) that immobolize enemies instantly. You also have stealth takedowns, where you can swoop down and web up an enemy without causing too much of a disturbance. So, yes, very similar to Batman: AC. Still, it's fun to play and watch as ever, and the movements are VERY Spider-Man.Read more ›
A exceptional buy!
In a market currently dominated by military FPSs, EA sports games and sequels galore, it is refreshing to play a straight-forward action/beat-em-up like this. Based on events taking place a few months after those of the film upon which the game is loosley based, you will swing, crawl and somersault your way through a roughly 5 hour campaign which takes you through underground labs, sewers, banks and the wonderfully sprawling landscape of New York's Manhattan island. Similarities in gameplay can be drawn with the Arkham (Batman if you didn't know already) series, allowing players to seemlessly use fluid attack and counter combinations or stealth to take down enemies. Various different ways of using the 'Wall Crawler's' infamous webbing also make combat varied and keeps you from becoming bored from the frequent button bashing.
The game also delivers a wonderful depiction of Spiderman himself. Swinging and tumbling through the city scape, running off walls, bouncing from flagpoles and somersaulting under and over bridges has never been easier, yet the effect, both visual and sensual, is tremendous. I really think I will never tire of simply web slinging my way around the vast metropolis on offer, gazing in awe at the athletic twists and turns of Spidey.Read more ›
