It's a turn-based game were you have to guide your tiny civilization (choose from 21) from 4000 B.C. to the end of scoring in 2020 A.D., competing against other civs and fighting off barbarians. You begin with 1 or 2 Settlers, which create the cities and improve the land around them. These cities then produce structures, wonders and units to defend, attack and expand your empire. There are around 50 units altogether; from archers to tanks, triremes to aircraft carriers and everything in-between.You can carry on playing past 2020 A.D., which is when the most fun happens; conquering the other civs with your marines, stealth fighters, submarines and howitzers.
It isn't a fast-paced game but the fun is in planning what your cities are going to build next for the biggest advantage, where to create new cities, which civs to conquer and which to make peace with. There's a massive amount of things to cope with; choosing which government to rule with, trying to keep your citizens happy, nuclear warfare which can lead to global warming, lack of funds which can bankrupt your civ. There are 6 levels of difficulty so it is accessible to a wide range of ages. I started playing it at 11 or 12 years old and I'm still going strong!
I've played Civ II on the pc but prefer it on the PlayStation 1, oddly enough. It's a game you can play with one hand if you so desired, as most of the activity is going on in your little bonce! The graphics are basic, but contain all the info you need. I feel the PlayStation controller works brilliantly, with no need to use a mouse. There's a vast amount of interesting background info located in the in-game menu; about units, city improvements, wonders of the worlds. Just reading that can take 30 minutes!
